My evil scheme is to give each dog a full roll of toilet paper on April Fools' Day, while my wife is out, then leave the house -- hoping she'll be the first to return.

But now I'm afraid to do this without 'parental supervision'.  Might they eat it, or choke on it?  I think I'd better watch them.

Swallowing a little bit of TP is one thing; swallowing half a roll is another.

Has anyone heard of dogs getting in trouble this way?

I'd say to turn them loose and walk out the door, but have a window or something you can watch them through.  That way they might not see you, but you can still watch them.  Plus, that way if for some reason they don't start wreaking havoc, you can encourage them.

Our male corgi, Fred, LOVES to chew on cardboard (and eat it, too).  He has an uncanny ability to find paper cups and toilet paper/paper towel tubes even when we think there are none within reach.  He will methodically chew and eat the paper cups and cardboard, after tearing off fairly small pieces first and getting them nice and wet and chewy.  Sometimes he'll just sit on his prize and the little pieces he has torn off and dare our female corgi, Betsy, to come anywhere near him.  Betsy thinks he's an idiot, rolls her eyes, and runs to us to bark/tattle on Fred.  I've never seen him have any problem swallowing the paper/cardboard, but I admit that many times we haven't been around to witness anything until he's at the very end of his "snack."  We don't purposely let him have paper products, and we try to keep them out of his reach, but he does manage to find stuff with fair regularity.  (We joke that he has a secret stash of cups and other goodies that we don't know about, as these things just seem to appear out of nowhere!)  I don't worry about it too much, but I realize the risk isn't zero, either.  There have been occasions when the corgis were able to get hold of an entire roll of toilet paper or paper towels while we were out or weren't in the room with them.  In that case, Fred (and possibly Betsy, too), seemed to have had a fun time shredding up all the paper, but as far as I know they've never eaten the paper.  Fred has always seemed interested only in the cardboard prize at the center, LOL.  Could you test the dogs with a full roll to see what they do with the paper part?  I suspect they'll be more interested in shredding it than eating it, and you probably already know if either or both of the dogs are likely to eat the cardboard part.  If they are likely to eat either one, I probably wouldn't leave them unsupervised.   If they aren't interested in eating the paper or the cardboard, though, then I think you'll have a fun April Fools' Day (and take pictures, please).  :-)

I haven't heard of it.  Seanna LOVES the cardboard rolls, and destroys them.  She'll go get them out of the trash to get them on her own.  When I watch her destroy them, she just rips them up and spits the parts out (which I believe from the mess she makes)....Unless they ate like the WHOLE thing, it'd probably pass right through.  I had a psych patient that ate three whole rolls of TP one time (not just the holders), and they told her she'd be fine.  So I don't know what to tell you.  I'd definitely get the "unflavored" brand.

Noodles loves tearing apart the cardboard from either toilet paper or paper towels. I've never left him alone because he will eat some pieces from time to time, but never the whole thing. He loves destroying anything cardboard related. We just went grocery shopping Friday night and he got to break down all the boxes for us. That entertained him for quite a while and it always helps me fit more items in to the recycle bin.

If you encourage them to eat toilet paper, you may want to stock up on old newspapers for you own personal needs from now on.... as they may continue the prank longer than you bargained.

I gave my corgi a full roll one night by accident.....I was half a sleep, grabbed a new roll and he tugged on my leg so I literally handed it to him. Woke up the next morning to tp everywhere. He didn't really eat it......just tore it apart. He was very proud of himself ;).

John, only YOU would think of such a nefarious and evil deed....funny though!  If you do this, you must post pics.

I think a web cam would be great especially of your wife when she gets home and figures out you set your 2 lovely creatures up but we get to see what she has to say to you also NOT just the mess. I'd say "go for it".

I have heard about husband's getting in trouble this way. I hope your wife has something equally or more evil planned for April Fool's day.  Does she not read these posts?

Maybe you should give them each a roll of bounty paper towels, that way should your prank go totally sideways no problem because bounty is"the quicker picker upper"

Do it.
