We've gotten rid of those pesky fleas, thank goodness, but Sidney is still itchy and has irritated skin, probably from prior bites. Can anyone recommend something I can apply to his skin to ease his discomfort, or should I give him a Benadryl? I'd rather not give him the pill unless it gets really bad, since I don't want him to be sleepy all the time.
I just don't know what to trust. I want something that will work and be safe if he licks it off.

Could you give him a benadryl at night and that might help even if it makes him sleepy as it would be time to sleep.Hopefully it would help a little the next day also! I don't know of a topical cream...could your vet recommend? Good Luck both of you!
Aloe Vera, also called the medicine plant or the burn plant, has long been recognized for its ability to sooth damaged skin. It makes a good choice for pets because it provides temporary relief on contact for hot spots, bites, clipper burns, and many other skin irritations that our pets may occasionally experience. Aloe Vera is also non-toxic, so we needn't worry about our pets ingesting it if they lick their sores.
Which brings us to the second reason why aloe is a good choice: it has a bitter taste. Thus, an application of Aloe Vera may discourage your pet from licking at the irritated skin. Licking can slow healing, so any easy ways to discourage licking are welcome.

Thank you!
Yes! Horse feed stores will carry something called Eqyss Micro-tek spray. It is a MIRACLE.
So glad to hear Sid is rid of fleas. I hate fleas. Glad we don't have a lot here. Hope he feels 200% soon!
