Good luck to you and Oliver!  I find Rally is a blast--Trace and I are working on off leash skills so we can try for his RA and then RE.  I think our next trip into the obedience ring will be another shot at the BN title.  We tried before but he just did not want to sit while I walked all the way around the ring without him.  Silly boy!

Oliver and I just started learning rally. Much to learn...on both sides.

Woo Hoo!!! Congratulations Patty, Frodo RN and Crystal RN!!!! How exciting! Great scores too! I think during awards all the handlers get distracted. Like at the Specialty when the judge gave John and Ashton their scores he just stood there with a cheezy grin and the judge had to tell him to come get his ribbons. LOL

Now you guys have to get ready for OFF LEAD!! :D

As an update (I went out of town early Monday morning so this my first chance online), BOTH dogs Q'd on Sunday! As a matter of fact, Frodo came in 3rd and Crystal came in 4th! I was so surprised that when the judge said the number, i was smiling and looking around and suddenly said, "Oh, that's US!" everyone was laughing. The judge was Allen Immerman, who seemed to judge pretty easily, at least for the Novice dogs. Crystal got an 89, Frodo got a 94. I knew where Crystal lost her points - a couple of times she was obviously lagging and sniffing, and when I told her to 'finish' around me at one point she kept stopping and sniffing. Still, I was very pleased!! There were 9 dogs; one did NQ but that one was far, far worse than even Crystal - and what was funny is that she'd just entered him both days just in case, he'd already got his RN the day before. He just had an obvious off day.

So that means that they are now:

Ffallian's Ring-Bearer RN
Hylane's Haunting Melody CGC RN

Great!!! I'll have to look. Congrats on him Q-ing even in the rain!!! Maybe I should have more hope for Crystal this weekend. We'll see!

An indoor riding area or a large business might be helpful. And yes, even wandering around the feed store! Maybe you can find a community center or something? Maybe even offer to do a demo and run dogs through it while doing training? ;) Trying to come up with creative ideas ...

Thanks for the good vibes, we will definitely need them! both us AND the dogs! :)

I finally got motivated and uploaded Ashton's first and second legs of Rally Advanced to this website. Feel free to check them out. If he can Q, so can YOU!!

Thanks for the suggestions. I know one of our club members is trying to rent one of the buildings out at the fairgrounds for the winter so hopefully that pans out. As for trainers, we really don't have any that do rally and agility. Basic obedience is pretty much the extent of dog training available in my one horse town. Oh and my local PetSmart is actually Kelly's. We drive to Kennewick to shop. LOL

The only other thing I could think of was tracking down someone who owns an indoor riding arena or find out if who ever owns some of the large out-of-business buildings (ie K-mart which has been empty for years) would rent to us. Hmmm, it may just be practice wandering around the feed store. :P

Best of luck to you Patty, Frodo and Crystal. Ashton did his CGC test after the Collie club specialty so he was finding all kinds of bait on the ground. Yeah, at times it was more like a tracking demo than obedience. LOL Just remember to use a happy voice, lots of praise and HAVE FUN! I will send good luck vibes to your corgi kids on Sunday. Actually, I will start now... *stay focused, stay focused, don't sniff the ground, stay focused...*

Oh and in a weird twist of fate, Ashton Q'd on the second day of his last show! We were absolutely convinced he NQ'd so we left before the scores and awards were given. We had a long drive across the state, it was raining and we were convinced he NQ'd... so we just got the heck outta there. Apparently the judge just docked 10 pts and not NQ'd him. :D The weather was so awful and the conditions of the course not ideal so I think the judge was much more easy going on the performances of the dogs. Luckily for us one of the stewards knows us (also a corgi owner) and she mailed us his second place ribbon and his green Q ribbon! Needless to say we are still in shock since this means it was his 3rd leg in Advanced! We looked up his score on the Superintendent's website and he got a 90! Little miracles. We did learn that we should never leave until we know for sure what the results of a run are. Never assume. Lesson learned.

Of course this means he moves up to Excellent. Scary!!

Well, Sunday I'm going to try to get both of my corgis their RN. I have a very strong suspicion that my girl will NQ. She's getting worse with training instead of better! On Tuesday I was going through the course at our class, and not only would she not pay ANY attention to me at all, she managed to find and grab a piece of chicken in the grass! I literally battled with her over it (yes, I dropped everything to instead get it out of her mouth) and although she didn't growl she was definitely not giving it up easily! After that, I was quite rattled and she was angry and we limped through the rest of the course and were quite chastised by the teacher. My boy, Frodo, did just fine, of course, although he too was a bit distracted. Problem with training at the fairgrounds is that sometimes there are areas where there's been events, and there was food everywhere. I was so embarrassed and felt like a terrible trainer!!! So, right now, my confidence level for Sunday is just about nil. I'll try to have fun regardless though....

Our kennel club does train indoors in the winter; they train on the fairgrounds. Then again, out here the only thing we really have to worry about is rain; it rarely gets so cold that you don't want to train, so long as you keep moving! I know there are private Rally trainers too, who may or may not train indoors. What would I do? Hmmmm.... maybe try to find a rally trainer who trains indoors and do 'drop-ins' to run their course, if they let you? Otherwise, maybe your local petsmart or petco does have an area big enough to train in, and may let you set up there on a scheduled time. Look for places with big dog training areas - one of the petcos by us has a large back warehouse-y area that they let training groups go into, perhaps something like that would work...

Here in the Columbia Basin (Washington state) we have a couple of ways to practice. We have a nice Dog Training Club which offers various classes in their building (half of an old quonset hut) and then also have Agility/Rally activities offered on nice days for members in the back yard of a club officer. It's still a little cold though, but if you keep moving it's not too bad. They also used to use the county fair grounds for activities, before they got their building. Maybe that might be an option for you guys.
