I love the Furminator....I have very good results from it. I think with any brush, you need to be careful not to brush too hard, as it would hurt the dog. I also agree that by brushing them often, it gets them use to being touched and you'll have a much easier time of it. My 4 month old puppy is just crazy though, and can't sit still for anything! ;)

My Scout just loves to be brushed, so all these comments are surprising to me! Puppy owners should get their pups used to being handled--by making it fun, giving "massages", touching ears, paws, looking in mouth, etc. Good breeders will start this process as part of socializing the pups. Unfortunately, many pups are less than well-socialized by the breeders before they are sold.
There are also combs that make this a whole lot easier. The one I use is called the "Untangler", made in USA. I forget where I bought it--maybe Petsmart. The teeth on the comb rotate, and it does not pull as much as many combs and brushes. I also have a Furminator--and it really works--but Scout doesn't like it much. It is pretty harsh, and you have to be very careful to be gentle with it.

mini has a huge problem with letting me brush her, AND clipping her nails, i found if she is sleeping it is alot easier...i always have treats ready for when she wakes up too....

Hi Alyson! Houdini is a year old now. I found it easier to brush him after he learned the " sit " command. After he learned to sit and stay, it was easier to make him sit to be brushed. I also found it easier when i reserved the " best " treats for grooming. Like cheese, or hot dogs. He is one stubborn little guy, and that is what worked for me.

I have the same issue with my little Zoey. She is 4 months old this Wednesday. She usuually is sleeping in her favorite spot in the livingroom by 9pm every night. I find that I can pick her up on my lap and brush her with no resistance. Of course I have to "flip" her over to get the other side. With my old man Corgi (Fox 11yrs old), he was the same way as a pup. He loves being brushed now. I think that pups see being brushed as play time.

Hi everyone! I'm Alyson and this is Roscoe. He is about 3 months old and he is definately a little-big dog. He is so funny but SO stubborn! Does anyone else have to wrestle their little dog down to brush him? He hates it but he's getting flakes and needs it. Any advice? I already tried treats but he just bucks and spins while he's eating so I still can't brush him...
