Ok, this is my first time writing a blog. Hell, this is my first time writing anything diary-like in my life. Who knows if anyone will read this but I am feeling bored waiting for American Idol to start so I figured I would write about Bailey for a bit.
If you have found this blog and are reading it, it means that you have seen my profile page and already know that my partner and I adopted Bailey, our PWC, on March 19, 2011. He was born on January 1, 2011 so he was 11 weeks old when we got him. Most people get their pups at 8 weeks but we lucked out. We were meeting the breeder for the first time and looking at some newborn pups with the hopes of placing a deposit on one of them. Heading into her farm, I was very excited but also a bit frustrated that I was going to have to wait 8 weeks to bring home a puppy. I am a rather impatient person. I want something....I get it. I don't save up or shop around. My impulsive nature drives my family crazy probably because I am both impulsive and a procrastinator. Anywhoo, as the breeder showed us around, we headed to the puppy yard where all of her puppies play. Suddenly, this sable & white pup comes running over in the middle of a pack of grey Cardigans. He stood out and I immediately asked her about him because she had previously told me by phone that she did not have any pups that were immediately available - only 4 litters that were due throughout the month of April.
His name was What About Bob (called Bob for short). The breeder was keeping him as a new sire but, as of that morning, had decided to sell him because she already had plenty of males and had to pay for an expensive c-section on the litter that we had come to see. I felt like Jodie Foster in "Nell" when she was introduced to Smartfood white cheddar popcorn. WANT, WANT, WANT, WANT! Needless to say, Bob left the farm with me and my partner and became Bailey. We felt very lucky because this dog must have been the pick of the litter if the breeder was going to raise him as a sire. Three weeks later, I met with the breeder again to pay for Bailey and get his final health certificate and vet check-up. She remarked on how amazing he looked and even expressed her regret in selling him only because he was such an incredible looking corgi. I know I am a doting Daddy but aren't all parents. Bailey is just the greatest and I feel very fortunate to have him in my life.
Well, it is almost time for Idol so I am going to close out this blog. I will be back to write more Bailey tales for anyone who reads this...for just for myself. :-)

Ordinarily, I'd think that impulsiveness isn't a good thing when acquiring a dog -- such a huge commitment -- but sometimes it happens that way. 3 months after we lost Siri, my wife was emerging from grief and just beginning what I'd expected to be a months-long research process to find another corgi, but I returned from a 2-week trip, and there was Gwynnie (6 months old). Not the way I'd expected it to happen, but it worked out well. They were rightly hesitant to give her Gwynnie without even meeting me (incommunicado in the desert), but they happened to see a postcard I'd sent with a hand-drawn corgi cartoon, and this helped persuade than I'd pass muster. But they were taking a gamble. I had not been much involved with our first dog; in a way, Gwynnie was my first dog.
It might just be better to get Bailey at 11 weeks. Some say they learn social stuff and bite inhibition during weeks 8-12; Bailey's litter may have been separated at 8 weeks, but it sounds like there were all those cardies about for socialization.
Hey, great job, first-time-blog-writer! I liked your story. Bailey is adorable!
Sooo, who do YOU like in Idol?
