I switched Shiro from Frontline to Advantage because it was way cheaper and many people said it's better. Has anyone noticed that horrid and nauseating smell it has? I couldn't go near my dog for the first 2 days and it's still lingering. Also it only works for a couple weeks, then he gets fleas anyways. It's so annoying, isn't it supposed to protect for a month?
I do not apply it until 2 days after bath, and don't wash him for at least a week after, so I don't know what's going on. Maybe I got a bad batch?

OK, I do dry his stuff on high in the dryer so that shuold do. I've never seen the fleas on anything except Shiro, I assume he does pick them up from other dogs.
If all the topical antiflea get washed off with soap then I better switch to oral. I do not wash Shiro frequently but I would like to have that option if needed without being afraid that he'll get fleas soon after.
My vet tech said wash 2 days after is fine, but obviously not.

We've used Advantix. It does have an odor that last a few days at least, but seemed effective for at least more than a month. We don't wash the dogs very often.
We once used a company called Flea Busters that came to the house and dusted all carpets and upholstery with sodium polyborate (borax, basically). It's not a neurotoxin like most insecticides; it supposedly dehydrates the fleas. It was guaranteed for a year, as I recall, and seemed effective for several years.
This is in Seattle WA; cool, wet for 9 months and warm, dry for 3 months. Might work differently in different climates.
You needn't wash bedding to kill fleas. I think 20 min. in the dryer will kill fleas and eggs.

my vet tech's always remind me when I buy mine that it is water proof not soap proof so you may be just washing it off of him....I bathe mine 1 a month before treatment =)

Krystal, you are freaking me out! In the house? Bedding?? Oh gross!!!
We had roaches in the past and that was disturbing enough, but fleas! I'm gonna have to detail my entire apartment and call exterminator again.

this year has been a TERRIBLE year for fleas. They are now coming inside the house for the winter so be sure to treat your house thoroughly. They love dark, warm places so be sure to treat under your baseboards in the house and all bedding! I treat my dogs with an oral tablet called Comfortis (available through your vet) it works wonderfully without the hassle of the smell or the greasy appearance.

Yup hot water and a hot dryer and even the floor where his blankets are should be washed also or vacumned. If he has a bed that can't be washed...if you can put it in the dryer and heat it!!! Poor neighbor dog!!!!

Good Luck!

I suspect he's getting them from the neighbor's dog. I didn't ask whether they use antiflea on him or not, but the dog is 10 months old, not neutered and not vaccinated against rabies. Yeah.
So he doesn't play with him anymore. I didn't know I had to wash his stuff in hot water, I'll try it.
Shiro plays a lot with other dogs, we go hiking and to a dog park, so I guess he has plenty of chances to pick them up (fleas).

Frontline still works for me and I only use it maybe 2 times a year...if the dogs get fleas...which is very seldom or when the ticks are bad! Maybe they can't mask the smell of the insecticde they use! Do you know where he is picking these fleas up from? Could there be a blanket or something that hasn't been washed and dried in HOT water??? If you can find where he's getting the fleas and take care of that then after 1-2 times of this he should not get fleas again...unless they're on your lawn. Good Luck!
