New Addition to the Family, Hopefully not for Long...

If you read my blog post about my dad's dog Betty you know what situation she was in and what kind of dog she is.

In short, my dad kept her restricted to the kitchen and backyard 24/7 for the past year. She spends significant amount of time in her cage and is never taken out for walks.

Being a boxer mix she is extrmely hyper and needy, constantly wants attention and playtime. Will whine if left alone and destroy things.

My dad's busy and he doesn't have enough time (or…

Switching to Evo

We ran out of Origen puppy formula and it was time to switch to adult food anyways. I know everyone says that the switch should be gradual, but Shiro eats a large variety of meats along with his kibble (not at the same time) so I felt it wuold be OK to start a new food right away.

He usually gets cooked chiken, ground beef or turkey, sometimes pork every other day, and when I switched from Innova to Origen he didn't have any problems at all.

Anyways, the store near us doesn't have… Continue

Advantage horrid smell

I switched Shiro from Frontline to Advantage because it was way cheaper and many people said it's better. Has anyone noticed that horrid and nauseating smell it has? I couldn't go near my dog for the first 2 days and it's still lingering. Also it only works for a couple weeks, then he gets fleas anyways. It's so annoying, isn't it supposed to protect for a month?

I do not apply it until 2 days after bath, and don't wash him for at least a week after, so I don't know what's going on. Maybe… Continue

Moscow stray dogs know how to use subway

Russian scientists say that Moscow stray dogs became much smarter. The four legged oldest human’s friends demonstrate real smartness such as riding the Moscow metro every morning to get from their suburban places of living to the fat regions of Moscow center. Once they arrive to the downtown they demonstrate different new, previously unseen for the dog skills.

Update on black spots on belly skin.

They are gone!

I stopped Innova Large Breed Puppy food about 3 weeks ago and started feeding him homecooked ground turkey with carrots, green peas and broccoli with little bit of garlic and olive oil. A week later I added Orijen Puppy Food. So now he gets delicious homemade for breakfast and high quality kibble for dinner.

He is not itching as bad anymore, only sometimes ears and chest, the eye bugers got a bit worse for 2 weeks (I was warned by a friend-breeder that it would… Continue

Exercise Pen and more

Shiro's exercise pen is here!

It's Midwest, 30in high with a door, black coated. We put it in the corner where his cage is. This thing is huge! Good thing you can fold it as much as you want. We don't even use the door, just open one of the panels. I don't think he feels confined in there, but I don't really know what he's doing there by himself. Those 2 times I left him i there he stayed in his cage! Either he doesn't know he can play there with his toys or just bored. Also there's a… Continue

is this cruel enough to report?

This is a very long story.

Alsmost 3 years ago my dad's wife nagged him to get a dog saying that she was bored to be alone at home. She is a nurse and when she's not at 12h shift she's at home all day. I don't remember them looking for a dog for a long time and waiting, I just remember they typed in "boxer-bulldog mix, raleigh nc" on craigslistand found a couple of puppies and went to see them.

They picked up Betty the same day they saw her, $300, no questions, no parents… Continue

Getting fixed today

Shiro is at the vet's right now, getting the operation done. It will be more complicated (and expensive) than a regular neuter because he's criptorchid, but we're prepared and just hoping for the best. He will be out today by 6pm and if everything goes well should be fully recovered in a week. It will be hard to keep him from playing and frapping but hopefully I can compensate with lots of home training.

The technitian also noticed that he had some staph infection on his belly and that… Continue

Peed in the Bedroom Again

This is actually funny. In 3 months of owning this little devil it was THE FIRST time ever I caught him in action.

We have this mirror in the bedroom that has to go on the wall, but we never have time to do it. Shiro was playing with it a couple times, trying to figure out where's that dog. It was funny to watch him looking in the mirror, then trying to look behind it. So last week he peed in front of this mirror twice in one day, and I already blooged about it. I thought part of it must… Continue

Back to Potty Training.

Shiro is 6 months (today actually wow) and till last week he's been very good in terms of not peeing at home. A few days ago he had 2 accidents in one day in the bedroom. We usually try to keep him out of there because our bedroom is a mess (not my fault) and he always finds something to steal. He's allowed in there if one of us is with him. I think that might be the reason why he decided to use it as his bathroom. Something like "Oh, I don't eat or play or sleep in this room, so why not pee in… Continue

Camping Trip to the Beach

This was my first ever camping trip and Shiro's first encounter of ocean. I think my fiance Evan had camping trips before, but he was a boy and he probably don't remember much.

Anyways, we borrowed my dad's tent, got plenty of snacks, anti-mosquito stuff, bedding etc. We drove to the beach for about 2.5 hours due to pouring rain half the way. It was so bad that everyone had to slow down on the highway to 50 mph and turn on hazard lights. Shiro doesn't care about rain or storms so he just… Continue

Got Bitten by a Lab

Last night I took Shiro for a walk and noticed that there were two dogs in our neighborhood dog park. He loves to play, so we came over and before entering asked the owner if her dogs were good with puppies. She said yes. Shiro was very excited to meet them at first, but then they kinda lost interest in each other and were just walking around and running occasionally. At some point Shiro got under the Lab like he likes to do with big dogs all the time. Well it was a bad idea. I heard loud… Continue

Puppy videos

I created an account in Youtube to post Shiro's videos. I figured it's be a lot easier than to post the videos on all social networking sites that I am a member of.
If you would like to see them, here's the link
http://www.youtube.com/user/ShiroTheCorgi#play/all
My fave is the one where he rolls on the floor after bath. Shiro used to be very vocal back then. :)
Enjoy!

The Laziest Dog in the World

There's no doubt I have the laziest dog in the world.

Every dog owner I talk to has the same story when it comes to mornings. Their pups usually cannot wait to get up. They run to wake up the kids when alarm goes off, they wiggle their bodies and whine anxious to get out of the crate, they rub their faces on their owners and radiate excitement.

Shiro had never had any of this happened. Not even once. Our mornings are totally different.

Usually I get up at 6, but on weekends I… Continue

Labrador play date

We were hanging out in the fenced dog area in my neighborhood when I saw two labradors runnig towards us and 3 kids and 2 adults trying to catch them. They stopped next to the fence to say hello to Shiro and he was super excited. LAter on the owners let their dogs in the park. At first I was a little nervous because of how big they are, but then I saw how careful and gentle they were with Shiro and I let him off the leash. He had a blast! It was really funny to see him trying to catch up with… Continue

bully sticks

A few people told me that those are awesome. So wentto a specialty pet food store and I got one. I must say Shiro liked it a lot. He's still a puppy, so it would take him a ehile to go though the whole thing. The problem is, those things stink soooo bad. Once one end got soft, I could smell it from another end of the room. Nidless to say, his breath was horrible as well. So I had to get rid of it and go back to pig ears. He likes them even more and they don't really have a smell.

First week at home

So it happened, we drove for 4 hours and picked up our precious baby. The breeder crate trained him, so he was totally fine while driving. In fact, he went to sleep as soon as we put him there. He's great with potty training besides couple of accidents at home right before my eyes (it's very hard to tell when he's going as he doesn't change his position and does it in seconds). I usually let him have some water in the morning, then take him outside to relieve himself.

He hasn't been eating… Continue
