I had not even been trying to get Waffle a CGC because we'd never been in an obedience class and I was adamant that we would fail--and was I wrong or what! Our CGC performance was FLAWLESS. The trainer giving our test—who has been training dogs for 20 years and has taught countless CGC classes and given countless CGC tests—said that Waffle was the best dog she has ever tested for the CGC. Wow!
Anyway, we took the CGC at the Virginia Tech Pre-Vet Club Annual Pet Show. We entered in 6 categories— Best Costume, Shortest Pet, Obedience, Best Trick, Hurdle Jump, and the Obstacle Course.
I did the “inbread” thing for best costume—he was going as an inbred dog! I bought a whole loaf of bread for the occasion (I don’t eat bread so I didn’t have any on hand) and put bread on his arms and face. Well, the “costume” lasted for all of 10 seconds but I did get a big laugh from the audience! That’s all I wanted. I ended up standing awkwardly around while the judges picked the winner.
I love the dog who won, though. He was a JRT/Dachshund mix named Aslan! Oh, I love midget dogs. He was the Easter Bunny.
Waffle ended up being the TALLEST dog in “Shortest pet”— if we were going by proportion, he would definitely have placed. But instead they were just going for strict height, so a teacup chihuahua won and Waffle got last. Boo.
For “best trick”, I made a steak and made him leave it and do tricks around it while it was on the ground. We placed third—we lost to the reigning champ, Kodiak (a golden/lab mix) who can read signs, and a flyball/disc Border Collie named Jackson who could do backflips. The only thing I was thinking when I was watching Jackson flip around was that if Waffle did that, he’d die. He’d just snap in two.
We placed second in Obedience ONLY because we went first. Kodiak had to really step his game up to outshow us.
The obstacle/agility course they set up was bad. Like, just awful. Most of the obstacles were baby versions of actual agility obstacles, which is fine, but the Pre-Vet club people can’t set up a course. Waffle refused two jumps—which is fine by me because half the jumps were twice the height they should be for a small dog. We also messed up on the first weave exercise because it was done with really tiny cones on the ground instead of weave poles. Derp. Those refusals cost us first place but we still pulled second.
Last was the hurdle jump, and we placed first! He knocked over the first jump but they didn’t have anything in the rules about that, so… we did it the fastest and he won. lol.
So by the end of it all, he was exhausted, but not exhausted enough to pass up playing with our Golden friend, Beamer.
When they announced Best In Show, I’m sorry to say that we didn’t place. We got third place last time because two people dropped out—which means we were actually 6th or something. I think we came in 4th this time. Aslan took third instead though, which is fine by me!
I won a gift basket thing full of Honest Kitchen stuff at the silent auction. While I was waiting for auction to end, Blacksburg’s only holistic vet told me that he was the healthiest, most fit Corgi she has ever seen. That’s two huge compliments from animal professionals in the same day!
I would expect nothing less from my Waffle, even if I say otherwise.

That's awesome! You must be so proud of Waffle...save a little pride for yourself though. :) Congratulations.
I'm inspired. Maybe Al could get his CGC. We might have to work on a few things, but he's quite attentive.
Those are some great play shots, too. Gosh he's a fine-looking dog, and he looks happy.
Waffle, you ROCK!!! You too Rachael!!
So sorry that things did not go exactly as planned. But it sounds like you and Waffle had fun! Waffle is such a little cutie! I hope you keep trying!
I see the pictures now! (computer at work must have been being weird) and Waffle is so cute in the last picture.
Those action shots of Waffle and Beamer....I love them! All the pics are great and your idea of an inbread corgi just cracked me up...you should've won just for sheer imagination! Love that....'inbread'....LOLOL.
Congrats to handsome Waffle!
Okay, that sounds like the best day ever. :D Waffle looks so beautiful in that last pic; he has such a darling expression and lovely coloring!
Sorry to hear that the agility course was a bit of a disappointment, but at least you guys showed off your stuff at the CGC test. :D Yay Rachael and Waffle!! <3
