Feeling horrible about neutering Buddy. :(

Hey everyone,

Normally Becca makes all the posts, but I (Kevin) had to come here for support today. Tomorrow, Buddy is scheduled to get neutered and have the home again chip "installed"... I feel like a horrible person for doing this. I am currently unemployed and I am with Buddy every waking moment of our lives and I can't even look at him without my eyes welling up. I just feel horrible about having this done. Right now he is smiling and all happy and i'm sure he will be the same on the car ride up tomorrow only to wake up with something missing. Is it just a Guy thing that makes me feel this way? How do I know for sure that he isn't gonna be traumatized?

Bottom line is, I signed a contract when we brought Buddy home and agreed to have it done. Even though, right now it's a huge financial strain... he's 8 months old and he is becoming more aggressive and dominant especially with me. It's easy for me to get mad and think getting him snipped is a good idea, but is this just selfish anger?

Advocates for both sides of this discussion will try make you feel bad about whatever choice you make when it comes to this topic, so honestly, i'm not looking for some political discussion on what you feel is right or wrong.

Any help is appreciated!

Kevin

EDIT: For some reason I can't reply to my own blog. Buddy has been in surgery all day, we will be leaving to pick him up in about an hour. Thank you for all your support and I will update ASAP.

As a woman, I can say I honestly felt the same way. I felt so awful at the thought of Baxter being away from us all day, going through surgery and waking up... "without." Baxter was much younger when he was neutered, so that might have made me feel more protective over him. We had a contract too, so that made it somewhat easier to think about.

I will say though, when I picked him up, while he ran right over to me, he didn't seem too happy. When I put him in his crate in the back seat, he whined/cried the entire way home. It was unlike any whining I've ever heard before. I'll never forget it. I almost wish I could have recorded it. It was like he was trying to lament on what had just happened. It was adorable and heartbreaking all at the same time. After a car ride like that, I wasn't sure what to expect. He wasn't traumatized, he was just very very sleepy. So enjoy the sleepy-cuddles you get afterward because everything will be back to normal soon enough. The biggest issue you will probably have is how to keep Buddy from running around like crazy for the days/weeks following surgery. I don't know how much it will change his attitude. Baxter still plays more aggressively with my boyfriend than he does with me. But maybe it's just a guy thing in that respect.

Good luck to both of you!

Vivi doesn't even remember he had something there in the first place. :) He's still a happy happy dog who loves us. Buddy might be sore for a few days afterward, but he'll still be the exact same dog once he feels better.

You know, my father was the one that took Algy to the vet for this procedure all those years ago, and he felt terrible too. Algy didn't seem to be affected though, since it was our love, attention, and food that he wanted, not - not to be crude - his nuts. I am personally for the surgery in a case where you won't be using the little guy for breeding. It's animal responsible and can be seen as a postive from a health perspective if it were to come to testicular cancers. Don't fret!! He'll still love you! Good luck!!

Yeah, very much a guy thing! It is hard to take a perfectly healthy animal in for surgery though. And, they are so unsuspecting! It didn't really calm our banshee down that much, but who knows? Good Luck Kevin, keep us posted.
