The following is a bit gruesome, so if you are sensitive to loss right now, perhaps you might want to skip this post....
So, I had just called in sick from work this morning with a cold when my phone rang. Seemed strange at 7:30 am and I thought it might be work calling back for some reason, but it was my neighbor calling to say his wife had seen a dead dog at the bottom of our hill on her way out this morning. They had seen the dog loose yesterday, but then saw a car moving slowly near it and thought someone else had dealt with it. Apparently the other party was not able to catch her and she must have run off.
Anyway, I dried my hair and got dressed and went out, and the poor thing looked like she'd probably been hit by a car (based on how her body was lying). I don't think she suffered; looks like she hit head-first into the dirt pretty hard and probably broke her neck. She looked like someone's pet. I'm pretty sure she was an English Bull Terrier, though I've seen "pitbulls" of a similar type and she was at a funny angle so I couldn't be sure. She had on a pretty red leather collar with metal diamonds on it and looked like she'd been well cared for.
I called the police and they sent animal control, who let me know they would take her body to the shelter and keep her for a time so if anyone was searching for a lost dog, they'd have a chance to identify her.
It made me very sad. Ironically enough, a couple days ago someone stopped us and asked if we'd seen a grey pitbull that had escaped from his friends' apartment. We called the number and described the dog (one person's "grey" might be another's "white") but thankfully he called back to report their dog was found.
I've had dogs get loose more than once and how things turn out is luck as much as anything. Most house dogs are clueless about cars and don't seem to fear them; I guess they lack the imagination to imagine what such a large moving object might do to them. This dog was white and should have been easily visible, but if she darted out at the last moment....
I guess there is no lesson here, but as a dog owner it made me so sad to think that someone lost a friend today.

awww...poor puppy:(
i recently had to pick up my neighbors dead cat.i brought the cat to them and i broke down in tears like his wife.
i feel so sorry for the dog and its owner.
I agree. This is a very sad day. Someone or maybe some little kid lost a friend. And it is a hard learned lesson.
Such a sad way to start your day. Sad for the owners who maybe wondering where their dog could be lost, not knowing their dog died. :(
So dangerous for loose dogs and cats out there! Beth I am sorry you had to deal with this. Unfortunately it is so easy for a dog to get out. Good reminder for us to be extra careful.
I also have a girlfriend that had a well trained dog, no leash, left the vets office only for the dog to run out into traffic, he did not make it. I also have Sage who has no clue about trailers and not much about cars. She is very trusting:( The rest of my dogs go to the deck until the car shuts off and then run up to the car...don't know what I did wrong but she doesn't "get it".
Thanks all. I must admit it was hard looking at her just lying there.... I wish our neighbors had called us yesterday to tell us they saw her loose. We might have been able to catch her. Who knows, maybe not, sometimes loose dogs are really spooky. I don't blame them for not calling. They are fabulous neighbors and very caring people. But I can't help but think we might have been able to do something, assuming we were home when they saw her.
What an awful thing to wake up to. I couldn't imagine how hard it would be to learn my dog had been hit by a car. Working in a vet's office we often had pets brought in after being hit and sad to say the bigger dogs tend to fare much much worse than the little guys (which is totally opposite of what you'd expect). We once had a client leave the vet from an appointment only to have his dog slip his collar and run out and get hit by a car! Luckily the dog survived but the lesson there is when at the vet use slip leads and/or TIGHT collars and never let your dog loose until it is safely in the car. This happened more than once but the other occasions the dogs somehow made it through traffic unscathed. Poor dog, and poor family :-(
Oh, Beth what a way to start your morning. Poor dog. Glad that they will keep the dog for a bit and hopefully the owners will call and at least get their dog back:( Take care with your cold...I know how you're feeling as I have the worst cold I have had in several years!
