I've always had great experiences at our local dog park - and always keep an eye out for aggressive dogs and dogs with strong prey drives, especially since Goldy looks like a little bunny, but it never occurred to me to be on the lookout for greyhounds (pitbulls, german shepherds, etc, yes, but greyhounds? I had no idea).

We go to the dog park mostly on days I'm off work from school because I can pretty much guarantee there won't be any other dogs there, and if there are, there's usually not many.

Today we go and it's just us! YEAH! We're running, chasing balls, trotting around the field and right as we get ready to leave a guy comes in with a greyhound. I didn't think a thing of it - until we started to leave about two minutes later. I looked at Bear and Goldy and said, "Let's go" - like I always do, and they run to the gate to be leashed. When they took off towards the gate, the greyhound came out of NOWHERE, and you know how fast they are, and grabbed Goldy and had her down by the throat.

I ran over and shoved the greyhound, and she let go. Goldy was screaming, not yelping, screeeaaammming and Bear was barking his head off.

The guy was crazy apologetic. He's in town visiting family and in his town the dog park is split for big dogs and little dogs and his dog had never really seen a little dog within reach, his dog had never done anything like this before. He offered his phone number if I needed to get in touch with him.

I checked Goldy over and there was no blood and had her walk around for a minute out by the car. She seemed fine but I called the vet just in case to see if they thought I needed to bring her in to be checked over, they said to bring her on in to make sure there were no injuries I was overlooking or shock.

They've checked her over and said she looks good, gave us some pain meds in case she's sore later. They're both sleeping right now.

It might honestly have been one of the scariest moments in my ilfe.

Yipes! I know how scary that is. I posted just last week about a Boxer coming out of her house and attacking Sidney while we were walking in our nieghborhood. Everything seemed to freeze and it's like I was moving in slow motion, I'm sure it was just a few seconds but seemed to take forever to get her off my poor Sidney. Like with Goldy, no blood and he seemed to be fine after he shook it off, but scary scary scary!

Exactly! When you check your environment for dogs that are "likely" to be aggressors, greyhounds aren't usually on the list - I realize ANY dog can be dangerous, but they were just really far off my radar.

Beth, I considered greyhound rescue years ago until I an article in a dog mag. about a woman who came home to find her cat torn to shreds with her two greyhounds asleep on the couch. They had been fine for several months. Changed my mind fast!

I'm so sorry Goldy was attacked. I hope she's not afraid of dogs now. I never realized that about greyhounds either, until recently when I read it online. Apparently greyhound rescue is meant to emphasize that no greyhound should be off-leash when small dogs are around, but I'm not sure they all make that point. I was talking to a greyhound rescue person once at a pet store and I mentioned that we briefly considered it but we have cats. And she said they are usually fine with cats!! Which goes against everything I ever heard. "Fine with cats til your cat runs and the sight hound thinks it's prey" is more like it. Anyway, I hope Goldy is ok and I'm glad it wasn't worse. Good boy, Bear!

Aw, poor Goldy :( How sweet of Bear to bark the greyhound off. I'm so glad that she's not seriously hurt.

Thank you all for your good wishes. We've been going to the same dog park for a year now, and have never had a problem. I felt bad for the guy (and for Goldy) he was genuinely shocked at what his dog had done. Everything worked out for the best, and I learned something new :)

Oh I am so glad she is ok! I don't care much for dog parks for that reason unless there is a small dog area. I hope Goldy is not too traumatized!

Dog Parks can be scary places for sure! I hope your girl recovers quickly and doesn't harbor any fear of strange dogs from this incident. Grey Hounds are bred to chase down small and quick prey such as rabbits.......thats why they chase fake rabbits on race day and so many grey hound owners enjoy the sport of lure coursing with there grey's
