Yes, it is true. On 9/7/11 at 6:00 p.m. Isabella swallowed a sewing needle. YIKES! I saw something in her mouth, got to her, opened her mouth, saw what loooked like a needle or pin, reached for it...gulp, it was GONE! She certainly is a canine vaccuum cleaner with a bite like a vice grip...She has done well with "drop it" and had gotten many other unsavory things in her mouth, but NEVER swallowed anything...Fun.
Straight to the ER vet where she acted like her typical puppy self. Crazy dog! The xray revealed the needle in her tummy. By the time they got to surgery, it had moved to her large intestine. It may have passed. I wouldn't have waited around to find out anyway, but the fact that it wasn't removed right away I think made the surgery a bit more difficult than originally anticipated. Anyway, it was retrieved, thread and all. I have this, the xrays and massive credit card debt as my souvenirs for this unfortunate adventure.
This all happened just one month after she spent a night in the ER vet and the following day and night with her regular vet for what was determined to be a "virus"...throwing up, no appetite, listless, blood in stool/diarrhea, fever...
Moral of the story...Insure your puppy! Oh, how I wish I had done that!!!! Her first year with us has been VERY expensive, with the bulk of it in just the last month...
