I'm writing this blog to ask anyone if they have experience training a puppy.
Scarlet gets excited when ANYONE is around, or anything for that matter. When my mom comes over (and my mom just recently had knee surgery) Scarlet jumps up and licks and tries to love-nibble my mom's hands and face. She constantly pulls on the leash and jumps up when people pass us by at the park.

I know training is a consistent and soemtimes lengthy process, but I'm not quite sure how to get Scarlet to calm down in the presence of other animate objects.

Anyone with suggestions? Scarlet is 8 1/2 months old if that makes a difference.

With mine, the whole problem with visitors is how happy they are to see them so a treat from the visitor just makes them more excited (uncontrolled). I try not to have people that come over pay attention to the corgis until they are in the house and the dogs are calmer. It is a lot harder to get the visitors to do that then the corgis so it is an uphill battle! LOL

Izzie does it too but we've worked with her so it isn't as bad anymore. A key thing you'll want to do is that every time someone new comes in the house, make her "sit" and "stay" and then the person coming in should give her the treat. With another dog who was a lot taller and could knock people over, we went as far as "kneeing" him to make him stop jumping at people. It probably isn't necessary to do that to a corgi but I've found with Izzie, positive reinforcement was much more effective.

Sounds like normal corgi puppy behavior... lol... I know... its annoying. But isnt it cute!..:-)I'm sure as she grows and you work with her more, she will eventually calm down...Good luck.:-)

Obedience classes are a really great idea. Never give her attention unless all 4 feet are on the ground. Having her sit before you feed her will help her become better at that command. At her age she is testing boundaries so now is the time to be very consistent. I have found the easiest way to eliminate the excited greeting is to have a spot they go to when people arrive. At first you may have to leash her and give her a treat when she sits where you tell her to. Mine have to sit on the step. I say "go sit " but you can use any command. We were not persistent with Sparty when he was young so he tends to break if he is really excited so be consistent. Having her on a leash especially when your mom is over would be a good way to gain control.
