and it was the scariest thing ever! it only lasted about a minute because she said she was in a meeting and would call back. i was so nervous! i'm anxiously awaiting her call back. does anyone have any advice on how to make a good first impression to a breeder over the phone? what are the right things to say? what do they like to hear in a first conversation? i have my list of important questions i would like to ask her, but i obviously can't start off by bombarding her with questions..
ok!! she actually called while i was writing this. the conversation went incredible and she actually answered a majority of my questions on her own without me even asking. by the sounds of it, she health tests them a ton and by 3 different vets. she said that she had just come from the vet where they confirmed one of her dogs is pregnant and they're expecting on april 22nd. she said at this time she couldn't make any guarantee as to whether or not she'll have a puppy in the litter that is pet quality, as she breeds for show prospects first. i was very impressed with the amount of socializing she does with the puppies (she has a two year old and she also owns a grooming business and takes the puppies with her to her grooming salon once they've had their shots and let some of the customers handle them. among many other things too!)
i'm really satisfied with her, but like she said there's no guarantee that she'll have a puppy for me in this litter (and she charges $1500!! ouch!) what do you guys think? should i call some other breeders and see what their situation is just in case? i am just really impressed overall with this breeder, and i guess her price really reflects the care she gives to each puppy and the quality of the puppy. she said that she doesn't have a price difference between show and pet quality because she treats every puppy the same and all of her puppies go through the same vet visits, health checks, and socialization so she sees no reason to charge a different price.
your opinions?
oh and in case you were interested

i'm truly torn right now. overo is 7 hours from where i live, but that's not really my main concern. it's the price. i'm torn because i absolutely love this breeder. she is absolutely everything i was looking for. very credible and reputable! and she answered all of my important questions with flying colors. it's just that i was hoping not to hit the top of the price range (i was expecting to pay $800-1500). but thinking about it now, it's $1500 for the puppy ALONE! that doesn't include all of the supplies or the vet visits (from what i understand, neutering alone is $200-300) i'm just torn because she is extremely impressive and her dogs look great, which means my puppy will look great too. and she has the most detailed website of any of the breeders i've looked at from the PWCCA website (which i guess is why i called her first) plus she's having the litter at a perfect time for me. i don't know, i guess i should shop around a bit...
this is so hard!
I don't know how far this breeder is from you but if you cast your net a little farther you might find a pup for at least half of that. I put out some feelers here on the site when I was ready for another PWC and was given some good suggestions. Ultimately, a breeder heard through the grapevine that I was looking and CALLED ME! That pup didn't pan out for us but that breeder told another breeder about us and that one CALLED ME! I was reluctant to get too involved with this breeder because she was in Michigan and I am in Georgia. When we made up our minds that Logan (nee Mal) was the one for us, driving to Michigan to get him still made sense. He was just what we wanted and very affordable since he is a fluff. I guess I wrote all of that to say, be open and let people know you are looking. The right dog might drop in your lap!
PS- You may ignore what I just said. Those Overo pups are stinkin' cute!
I don't think my son had three doctors, so I'm not sure your dog needs three vets. Opinions will differ. Since I "scored" Dipper for $600 you might look around. "Not show quality" to me means that you are going to be low on the totem pole in terms of picking your dog. Anyhow the fact that she spent time with you is a good thing.
The price all in all is on the high side but I bet some have paid more. I guess if you have documented show dogs in the immediate lineage you're going to pay a high price because you're bidding against people who are into shows.
I definitely think you should call around and if possible visit the breeders. Don't do business with anyone who won't let you see the dog till the day you pick it up.

An Overo dog is a FANTASTIC dog to have. :] I would keep looking around just in case she doesn't end up having a dog for you, but I would make her my top choice unless you find a similar quality breeder for less money.
