I love my Corgi puppy- does he love me?

I have had Johann for almost 2 weeks now and he turned 10 weeks old today.  He was very sweet with me for the first few days... But lately he hasn't been wanting to cuddle and won't cooperate with his harness.  He just sits there.  I tug and release the leash but he continues to just sit and looks at me like I'm an idiot.  I offer him treats while we are walking but once he goes a few feet, he stops and lays down no longer interested in the treat.  When other people are out walking during leash training, they stop to play with him for a few minutes and Johann LOVES it.  I know he's just a puppy, but he is my very first dog and I am not really experienced with puppy behavior as all of my friends have only had adult dogs (save for one or two).   I haven't been doing anything wrong to him... I do have to crate him at night of course and we are having to discipline him a little for biting (a firm "No" and if he doesn't stop, a little pinch on the back of his neck).  Maybe I'm just paranoid, but I'm afraid that he doesn't like me anymore. Are most Corgis like this?  Do they just like new people/environments?  Will he be more lovey towards me later?

I remember Ace when i first got him loved me at first but didnt walk due to not being leash trained so i either carried him somewhere or pretended to walk off *he hated that so soon fallowed dragging the leash behind him* I made sure i was in a safe area when i did that of course.. and then came the part where i started back at work *was on a week vaca when i got ace* and my brothers friend spent most the time at home so he got to play with ace and stuff while i was at work.. i started to think Ace loved Nick more then me.. turned out that wasnt the case... Ace adores me now and gets very blue when i leave him alone.. Hopefully your little guy will turn out to be a charming young corgi man and im sure he adores you~

I agree with alot of the other bloggers here about the difference in Corgi personalities.Sometimes I think They're (some of Them)alot like cats:pet Me when I want!!We have a female who is not the lovey kind, unless she's ready, then she'll jump in your lap and enjoy it.Our boy is lovey no matter what, even after both his ccl surgeries!!We call him flopdog because He'll go limp just like a ragdoll cat to get loved!!We had boxers and They always wanted loveys. No matter what!!Kinda nice to have "real dogs: again this time :).Don't kill Me Boxer People!!

They are such silly dogs - right now as I sit relaxing on the couch Bear is in his crate, curled up with the door open and Goldy is on the other end of the couch stretched out as long as she can get. Goldy never likes to snuggle, but she'll come over and stand on me so I can nuzzle her neck with my nose, she loves that, but try to pet her and she jumps away like you have acid on your hands. Bear likes to touch me when he sleeps, but doesn't want to be "snuggled" - if I try he groans non stop, I do it sometimes because it makes me laugh.

You've gotten some great advice here - keep your smile on and keep handling him as much as possible, even if he doesn't care for it, it will make vet visits much easier. And be FUN! Lots of bouncing around! Mine love when I lay in the floor and let them "waller" all over me - also fun is Rescue Dog - I lay on the floor and put a blanket over my head and then in a high pitched voice yell, "help me CORGIS!" and the pull and dig at the blanket until it come off of my face and then I yell, "you saved MEEE" and there are kisses all around.

I have my first dog too.  Her name is Hunny and she just turned a year a few days ago.  Hunny has NEVER wanted to snuggle and that really hurt for a while.  I have to remember that she is a very furry dog and it's hot where we live so snuggles are rare.  Just recently (like the past few days) she has been sitting with me more and even snuggles when I lay on the couch!  I wouldn't worry.  Corgis seem to be pretty independent little ones.  As long as that nub wiggles, you're in.  Corgis seem to love everyone too.  No matter who it is, they get very excited to jump, kiss, and wiggle.  Johann is your baby and he knows it.  Give it time, he does love you.

He loves you BUT at 10 weeks he is just starting to experience life and walking and all other good things.A book would be great as are classes. I would suggest never physically pinching him...if  "no" doesn't work (when he nips) then a quick "owe" and turn away giving him no attention...there are several discussions on here about nipping. Eventually things will be figured out but you need to remember at 10 weeks he still is a baby. Many of mine like to cuddle but on their terms which means they decide when to jump up and sit by me but do like to be invited. Corgi are independant but faithful and loyal....give it some time:) Congratulations...they are also very smart!

He will go through many stages of development just like a human child. Pick out an inexpensive puppy training book at the book store and read a little about their development. Right now his needs are all he is thinking about but later you will be his whole world. I am glad you are doing puppy classes. I have had success with the biting by using very dramatic high pitched yelps. I would not pinch as you want your touch to be pleasant. Enjoy your puppy!

I can't help but laugh with your post because Rowdy did the same thing! I got him when he was only 6 weeks and we cuddled and snuggled for the first 2 weeks. Then he had NO interest in cuddling or sleeping in my bed. He destroyed everything he could and hated his collar.  After I got him fixed, he has mellowed out a bit, cuddles on the couch more, and minds his training. He still pulls on the leash, but he wears his collar (and some shirts) proudly. All I had to do was just make him wear the collar and pull the leash around the house, now it's nothing. He still won't cuddle in my bed though, which I think is strange. He prefers the crate at night to the bed, but loves to sleep on the couch when I'm napping on it.  He's going through a phase, it'll pass. He knows you're mama :) Nothing can change that.

Sending much patience your way when he starts teething. Rowdy started at exactly 16 weeks. It was a rough and tough couple of weeks when all the teeth were coming out/in.  Lots of ice cubes and late crying nights.  Now the dust has settled and I think we are thick as thieves :)

Enjoy your baby!

Wow, Thanks for all the great advice!

We are enrolled in puppy class that starts April 18th at the local PetCo.  It's Level 1 for puppies 8 weeks to 6 months.  It's mostly to focus on socializing with other dogs and people and learn very basic commands like sit, stay, come, etc.  I am really looking forward to the class.. I think it will help with the bonding.

I know Corgis aren't known for being cuddlers, but the first few days I had him he would just lay in my arms and lick my face.  If he is asleep on the floor, I can pick him up and hold him and he won't be bothered by it.  I just love him so much as if he were my own baby and I want to hold him all the time!

I have been trying the method of keeping a chew toy right next to me at all times and I stick it in his mouth when he is trying to bite my hands too much.  It was working for awhile... Until he realized what I was doing and now he will take the toy.. walk a few steps away.. drop it.. spin around and bite my hands again.  I have an arsenal of toys on the floor with me at all times though.. so we will work on it some more.

I know leash training will take a while to get going but he does do well when he wants to focus.  I always say "Good boy! Great job!" the whole time he is walking in a straight path at a steady pace.  We mainly do this on the dirt path at the bayou behind the house because I think the pavement is too hard for the pads on his feet.

The past few days he has just been very Corgi-ish and I know that I'm worrying too much about him, but he is my first puppy and I want to raise him right.  Again, thanks for the advice everybody- I really do appreciate it :)

I wanted to add that he SHOULD work on lots and lots of different surfaces; grass, pavement, gravel, dirt, wooden boardwalks, carpet, tile, vinyl. Just keep in mind his tender paws and don't expect him to go very far on rough surfaces.

Of course he loves you! Puppies often don't want to cuddle any more than a ten-year-old boy wants to cuddle. He is excited to see new people because they are different and interesting, and because it's a puppy's job in life to appease strangers so they want to take care of him and not hurt him. You will see him act in a similar way to strange dogs. I've lived with lots of puppies and almost none of them want to cuddle. They want to play and eat and sleep, play and eat and sleep. Puppies SHOULD love and eagerly greet every new person they meet at this age; it's a sign of a stable and outgoing personality.

It remains to be seen if he'll be a cuddler as an adult. I have one of each. Funnily enough, my cuddler is reserved with strangers. My non-cuddler wants to lick the face of almost everyone he meets but rarely treats us with affection. However, he is my boy. He will only work for me (my agility instructor laughs because he balks and tries to get away if she attempts to get him to perform the easiest task for her, yet he'll do anything with excitement and eagerness for me). If I say "ouch" or look upset he's right there to make sure I'm ok. I am absolutely certain he'd lay down my life for me. My cuddler, on the other hand, expects me to look out for her and would go home with anyone who gave her a cuddle and a treat. So being openly affectionate is not really a measure of a dog's devotion to its owner.

Ten-week-old pups rarely walk much, if at all. Carry him to interesting places, let him wander and play and sniff, ask him to walk a few steps by crouching down and smooching at him and clapping and smiling, and call it a day. As his urge to wander grows, so will his willingness to walk on a leash. Instinctively, though, a pup that young does NOT want to try to go away from the nest area, so walking far is confusing to him. Also, the pads are still tender so rough or hard surfaces will irritate them quickly. You DO want him to start learning to walk on a leash, but think of going a dozen steps, or up to the corner and back. Don't think of going on a full walk yet for a few more weeks. Also be careful where you go if he hasn't had two rounds of puppy shots yet.

Finally, please don't pinch him about the biting. :) There are quite a few threads about nipping and biting, You can use the search function to find them.

Good luck with your cutie! :)
