Hi from California everyone! Cowboy is having an issue lately that we can't seem to figure out. He will be standing up and slowly but surely his butt just gets lower until he's sitting down. I know that this probably has something to do with age (he just turned 17 on June 19th) but he's showing no signs of pain or discomfort. I asked his vet about it and the vet said that he's not showing signs of arthritis and he's not aware of Corgi's having an issue like this without pain. I've started giving him a half of a baby aspirin to help him out a little and it has seemed to help out, but I was wondering if anyone else has had this issue with their baby. Any info would help us out!

Check out the yahoo site wheelcorgis, you will have to be accepted. They have lots of information on DM, or you could just google DM! Our Lucky has IVDD, so we are members of wheelcorgis, it is a great website, lots of information that comes across my email. The vet has me giving Lucky 500 of glucosamine daily - no baby aspirin ( do not give them together!) You can slip a towel under him and help him to walk, if it helps. Lucky hatesafraid of water, but swimming is very good for regaining strength. Good Luck!!

My vet says my Old Dog suffers from old dog legs. He says it's muscle weakness. The muscles have sort of atrophied with age, despite his activity level. Old Dog is a 15 year old Springer spaniel, and has been slowly getting worse for the last few years, but his hips, joints and bionic knees are still OK. Sometimes he slowly sinks, sometimes collapses. Recently he's been getting stuck in the doggy door and dragging his hind feet when he's tired. The vet has recommended several 5 - 10 minute walks per day, which we do out in the backyard while watering the flowers or playing with the young corgi. We tried increasing his NSAID to daily, but it made no difference, so we went back to his prior schedule. He doesn't seem to be in pain, but it really must hurt to fall down as often as he does.

Today I tried out a Bottoms-Up leash that I found used at the Humane Society. It was helpful enough that I feel more confident that I could walk him back the car if his legs gave out on him at the park. I would like to get him to ride in a stroller so he could accompany us on our outings like he used to.

Cowboy's symptoms sound a lot like Old Dog's, and I wouldn't be surprised if it's a similar issue. It's nothing you can actually solve, just cope.

I have friends with old dogs and their vet told them to give the old dogs some cartilage supplement with glucosamine. Apparently it works on dogs as well as humans. You can google it and ask your vet about. It works pretty well on joints in general not just athritis.

aw, try getting him one of those corgi carts. or whatever they are. itll help his back legs and he'll still be able to use his front.

Sorry...I can't help but it sure could be part of the aging process. You are very lucky to have him at 17!!!!!
