Need Some Help For A Friend...The One Who Lost Her Pup To Parvo

For those who may remember my posts on the thread regarding parvo about my friend who lost her brand new pup immediately after getting her.  She brought the pup home on a Thursday late afternoon, by the next day the pup was sick and at the vet's, the diagnosis was parvo.  The vet treated the pup for 4 days but she was so young she just couldn't fight it.  This pup...chocolate lab...along with several of it's litter mates were released to their new owner's at 6 weeks....several hours after receiving their first set of shots.  The pup my friend took was the only one who had parvo.  The mother dog died right after giving birth...something to do with bleeding out.  The pups had 2 surrogate mothers.

At first the breeder offered to refund my friend's money...several times, this was while it was undergoing treatment.  After the pup died she offered my friend the last female, my friend was scared to take her...understandably so.  Then the breeder had her vet request the other vet's records on diagnosis and treatment.  Her vet at first said it was wrong then back pedaled saying it was possible for only 1 pup to get parvo out of the litter.  Obviously she didn't get it at my friend's house....she was only there for 12 hours before she became sick.  Now the breeder is refusing to refund any money at all...she told my friend to check her contract.  My friend never signed nor did she receive a contract.  My friend wants to take her to small claims court....she has texts with everything the breeder said.

Can anyone recommend a good lab board like MyCorgi where my friend can talk to people and actually get good info on what to look for in a breeder, what to ask?  Some place like here where we can ask questions and actually get good answers and not be made to feel like we've done something wrong...you all know those kind of places.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  She is so stressed....losing her beloved lab of 12 years and then looking forward to all things puppy and the trauma of losing the little one and now dealing with the financial aspects of treatment.

I do hope this post doesn't violate any rules here, if it does I will remove it.

Thanks everyone.  Right now she is focusing on taking this breeder to small claims court.  She has given her every opportunity to do the right thing.  Thankfully all the exchanges have been by text so she has a record of the conversations.

Poor woman...I guess waiting would be better and talking with experts about the wait and when/how long is good to wait!

Agreed with Beth: she should wait at least six months before even considering bringing another puppy in there. But really, she'd be better off getting an adult dog.

It's been an eon since I had a lab, but when my son was searching for Charley I found this golden retriever forum: http://www.goldenretrieverforum.com/  . Goldens...labs...retrievers...medium-large...similarities. Some very knowledgeable people lurk there. They gave us a lot of advice on how to check out the parents' health status (there's a site where you can enter a purebred dog's official name and presto-changeo! Out come the results of testing on hips, eyes, etc.) and quite a few other valuable pointers.

Beth....that is her biggest worry about getting another puppy.  She is terrified that something is still lingering.  She has cleaned everything several times with bleach including shoes, the inside of cars, has tossed small rugs, even sprayed the small area in the yard  where the puppy did go with bleach killing all her grass in the process.

I'm not familiar with a board, but I wanted to offer some insight. First, it is most definitely possible for one pup in a litter to get sick and the others to be fine. The other pups may have had some maternal antibodies from one of the surrogates, OR one pup may have gotten a higher viral load and could not fight it.

Second, I don't mean to be a downer but I would NOT bring a young pup into a home where a dog with parvo had been, no matter how briefly. It is so contagious and can last a long time in the environment. I'd want a breeder who would be willing to keep the puppy back til it had its full puppy series completed.

Parvo is so scary. I'm so sorry for your friend.
