Thanks for all the encouraging comments I got earlier this week when I was deciding whether or not to add another member to what is quickly becoming a herd of dogs! While it was very nice of the breeder to think of me and offer me a chance at a beautiful show prospect, in order to get such an expensive puppy on such short notice (1 month) I would have had to use my entire emergency budget. Sky reminded me this week why I couldn't do that.

While I was out in the back playing Frisbee with him the other night, he jumped up high to catch it, and landed hard on his side and front leg. I was really worried for a few minutes as he got up, wouldn't put any weight on his leg, and stumbled around with his eyes closed! He ended up being fine a minute later, and the vet wasn't at all worried about him, but that made me remember why I have that money in the first place. Sky could have just as easily broken a leg or a rib, and I would have needed that money for him to have X-rays or surgery or whatever he needed.

I am going to work with the breeder, however, on getting the next good show prospect she has. She is having a breeding in the next couple months that should produce some good puppies, or I might wait until she repeats the breeding that produced the puppy she originally offered me (although that might be another year or more). I have every confidence the perfect pup will come at just the right time. Thanks to all at mycorgi for the support!

Very wise reasoning! And you certainly need an emergency fund if you are going to breed. It is no sure thing. Our new dog, Madison, earned her championship and had one litter which required a C-section, so that's the end of her breeding career (and I'm not sure what kind of vet bill that would be!). And when Jack's litter was born, the breeder had another litter at around the same time where the mom needed an emergency spay because she was bleeding. The breeder commented that anyone who is in the dog business to make money needs to be in another line of work. So yes, you need your emergency money, and probably even more than that once you bring home your show/breeding prospect; once they are being bred, there is that much more that can go wrong.

Your perfect dog will come when the time is right, and she may well be the first in a long line of great show and breeding dogs! :-)

You know even if you have to wait a year ...it might be worth it! I put my name on a list for a pup next year and that gives me time to get everything ready and Livvy will be 2 so she should be into an adult stage by then. I can't wait but it's something to look forward to in the future (oh yes and buy new stuff for too)! Good Luck on whatever you decide! Keep us updated!

It sounds like you made the right decision. You have to have an emergency fund! I could not imagine how difficult it would be to have one of my "babies" injured and not be able to afford their care. There are too many folks in that position now.
