Many of you know that Lyla had to make a trip to the animal hospital last night. I did hear from the daycare/boarding facility owner today and found out that yes, Lyla got fed yesterday... twice! I'm thinking that even just two meals though, they must have fed her A LOT for her to be as big as she was. The owner was very apologetic, and I said I understood how things can happen, and I had forgotten to mention that neither of my dogs get anything other than food I bring (I never said this when I dropped them off because I honestly never expected them to be fed during the daycare day, especially not twice). When I told her this, she had the nerve to ask me why they can't have anything else and then tell me that it will cost me an extra $3 per dog per day. Are you kidding?! I am really sad because I like this place, but it is ridiculous for me to pay an extra $6 a day for them to open a ziploc bag. This was not their policy last year, but I guess they have changed to make some extra money now. I'm pretty angry about it as they already have a 4 day minimum for holidays, so I'm already paying for more days than I'm using, and now I have to pay an extra $6 a day. Perhaps I'm being overreactive, but I have gone ahead and made plans with my pet sitter for the days I'm going to be gone. I feel bad that they won't have daycare during the days, but at least this way I know they are getting their food, and not accidently being fed the wrong food or too much food.

In house dog sitters work out very well for us. The dogs are in their home with their things. The sitters give the dogs lots of attention. Our last trip we were gone for a month. We knew the dogs were safe and happy as well as our house. Good pet/house sitters are worth every penny!!!!

I also agree they should have paid the vet bill as it happened in their care. We boarded Lance once and brought his own food in baggies and they did not charge us extra for that. It is ridiculous that they would charge you for bringing in your own food.

That is a shame but I would not trust them again! They should be reimbursing you for the vet bill. They had to have let her eat more than two portions because mine have done that a couple of times and believe me they were not that bloated! (it was miscommunications)

Yeah, I think they should have offered to pay the vet bill too, since they directly caused the problem! I've never used day care, but we board, and let me tell you, they will ONLY give the food you brought. It must be labeled, and they prefer it to be pre-measured but if you're staying for a long time you can give one big bag and an appropriate measuring cup. The kennel we use only charges extra for 1) dispensing medication or 2) a dog which needs to be separated completely at feeding time (the runs have partitions in the area where they are fed, but I guess some dogs need isolation to eat).

So it sounds very strange indeed.

I don't think you're overreacting at all! In fact when I read your first post I was going to comment then that I thought you should definitely be having a serious talk with the daycare owner! And I think that they should be reimbursing you for the EVet bill. And... I would take it one step further and advise the Better Business Bureau and or the local Chamber of Commerce, that they appear to be practicing "price gouging"!! How dare they charge you and extra $3 per dog per day to open YOUR bag of food!! Ridiculous!! And Shameful!!! What if Lyla had had a more serious reaction and God forbid the worst results? Nope... I don't think they should be allowed to get away with that!

I used to own a kennel - and let me tell you, if your dog went home with you and was overfed so much that you had to take her into the emergency vet...?

Not only would I have apologized profusely and felt horrible, I would have paid for the vet bill, and likely given you some credit for extra days to keep you as a customer and told you what steps I was taking to keep it from happening again. It's unacceptable that they asked you why your dog can't have anything else - frankly, I never gave a dog something extra unless the owner said it was all right or brought the snacks with. You never know what a dog is allergic to - and heck, some dogs have seizures being fed the wrong treats.

So, I'd say, well, do what you did -- call in the pet sitter, and go find a new daycare, yup! If they didn't notice your dog had a bloated tummy and wasn't feeling well, what if it had been something more serious, like bloat? Not a great thought. :)

We have used both in house sitters and doggy daycare when on holiday. I really do prefer for them to be at home as long as we have a reliable house/doggy sitter. Food changes make my doggies digestive system CRAZY!

I think you did the right thing- charging to feed them your own food is outrageous- its saving them money in terms of their food supply. She should be paying for Lyla's vet bill- not asking you for more money!

If Lyla was getting fed their food that alone could give her tummy some problems! Much more 2 x's! After an expensive trip to the vet I think you chose the right thing to do and at least your dogs have each other ! She really did have alot of nerve to want to charge you more after what happened! I know it can happen and I know my Wynn wouldn't hesitate to eat any food but if I were her I would have felt bad enough with what happened and just let it go!
