SNOUT SWELLING! HELP!

Gem came in from outside and her snout started swelling up!! It is like walnut size on each side and starting to spread into her eye some!! I figure she must of found one of the last bees left out in the yard???? I called her doctor and asked about giving Benadryl to her which I did about and hour ago but there is little difference in the swelling. They said to give 1mg per pound so I gave her 2 chewable children's benadryl tabs with some cheese. The dosage is 12.5mg per pill and she is 23lbs!! has anyone used children's BenADRYL with their dogs and did it work?? They said she has to come in if she starts to vomit or act really lethargic, which I would do anyway, but now she has had the Benadryl so I expect her to be sleepy! this is making me nervous!!!

I had a Golden Retriever once that had this and the shot gave him immediate relief. Hopefully the Benedryl will take effect soon. Poor thing!

Comment by Jane Christensen on October 28, 2009 at 2:42pm: My Livvy did this 2 x's this year. Do watch for more swelling/ant breathing problems and I'd take her inASAP and yes it seemed to take forever for it to go down! Livvy did not get sleepy! Good luck! Keep us updated!

Comment by Alice on October 28, 2009 at 2:42pm: My friend's dog came in from the back yard with swelling around one eye. I told her to give him Benadryl as well and it did bring the swelling down. After a few hours she gave him another dose and it went away completely. As mentioned, if he gets worse in any way, take her in. Hope She feels better!

They said I did the right thing, also, if he'll stand it, put a cold washcloth over the area to help with the swelling.

Comment by Beth on October 28, 2009 at 1:46pm: If the swelling continues to spread or does not go down, I'd take her in for a shot. My vet also said 1mg per pound, so the dose you gave was correct. I'm sorry about poor Gem! Their noses can get them in trouble.

Comment by Sarah C. on October 28, 2009 at 1:41pm: Mine's face randomly swelled up once and the benadryl worked in about 45minutes. I'm very sorry for Gem she must be very uncomfortable. I'd say keep her close by and make sure she's breathing ok. The waiting is the worst part. :/
