Hi All could some one advise me as this is the 1st tooth extraction I have had to deal with!.
My vet advised me that for 1 month Oscar could not have his morning Breakfast dog biscut or his evening dried food and bones were a no no!. I Have given Oscar his Smacko's soft stips of fish or liver or Beef he gets 2 He looks at me as if to say Dad where's my biscut sam got his!. My inquiry is could I soak his dried food at night in soup or broth till it is soft so he can eat it?. He is on Ecunuba dried food and his wet food is the BARF Diet. I know he needs to lose some weight and less will help but I don't want to starve hime either he needs his nutriants He gets that in the Barf Diet but he would get most in his dried food?. Paul my Partner is a Registered Nurse he told me in Hospitals this is what the do for patients with dental problems and have difficulty chewing solid foods I"m thinking pureed food in a blender yuk!. Can some one out there who has had the same thing happen to their Dog please advise if this is a good thing to do or not?.
Thank you in advance
Kind regards

Glad to hear he is doing well. I understand your concerns. When Wynne had her tooth pulled I was so nervous. My vet remembered to tell me about the food softened with water. Wynne ate that the first few days as I said before and then turned her nose up at it after that. That made me nevous too since she always eats. Luckily when I tried putting some regular food on top of that she ate it.
Glad all is well.
Update for Melissa & Jane re Oscar Have just spoken to my vet I'm doing everything right with meds and evertthing the vet forgot to mention at the time because of Oscar being so happy to see his dad plus other people admiring Oscar because you hardly see corgi's @ all these days!. The vets love Oscar because he has gone there every year for the last 10 years for his shots and they say he is their star patient!. Getting back to what I wanted to say! the vet forgot to tell me is was okay to put warm water and mash up his Ecunuba dry food let it cool and give it to him at his usual time with Sam!. Also unless there is any other issue's they will see Oscar @ 2pm Friday for his follow up appointment!. My stress level has gone down now thank goodness!.

Hi Melissa & jane thank you for the advice! We are seeing the vet Friday this week for a follow up I know it was on the upper right side towards the back but not quite the vet did notice a bit of infection above the tooth that had fractured!. That is why my vet wanted the tooth out straight away!. when I picked him up she explained about the tooth and everything else saying there was no problems and Iwas given the instructions about 1 month no 2b2 breakfast biscuit that the boys have every morning and bones were a no no! if I misheard about his Ecunuba dry food(which I think you refer to as kibble?) or misunderstood her instuctions about that I cant recall? That is why Paul called Faye our dog & House sitter who is a retired vet she told me to use war broth or warm water and mash up his dry food and let it cool before he eats it. We did this last night and he seemed okay it was gone in seconds!. My vet did stress that is he was licking the area by the extraction or using his paw I was to bring him straight back in!. My Vet knows me better than anybody that I wont hesitate taking my boys in if I not sure or worried!. Though the vet only gave ne antibiotic's for five days 1 morning and night with food and pain killer 1/2 tablet am & pm these will last till friday I'm about to call my vet in a few minutes to ask about the antibiotics? should I have been given more or will they do this on Friday at his follow up? will keep you informed.

The general recommendation at the vet I work at is to give the mouth a full 2 weeks to heal before going back to normal doggy activity. I would suggest scheduling a recheck appointment 2 weeks from the extraction to have your vet take a peak in his mouth and see that the extraction site is healed and he can go back to his dry food. That way you will feel 100% confident you are doing the right thing.
Fistulas develop generally in the canine teeth only. It happens when there is an infection or abscess that has begun to deteriorate the bone and a hole develops between the oral cavity and the nasal cavity. Occasionally just with an extraction of a canine tooth a fistula can form since the root of canine teeth are about 1 1/2 times the length of the crown (the visual portion). Since Oscar had a molar removed I wouldn't worry about a fistula but due to his age I would have the vet recheck his mouth to make sure everything is healing well. We routinely do dental extractions on 15-17 year old dogs and cats and they generally heal just as rapidly as the young guys do. The mouth is amazing in its ability to heal.
I will check with my niece who has a rescue Doxie who has had several teeth extracted.I do know that her dog developed a fistula and had to have surgery more than once and the last time it had to be done at the U of M Vet Hospital and the cost was over $5,000 (yup). Depending on the tooth my thought would be that chewing could cause him to rip the area open and dry food could get stuck in the area where he is suppose to be keeping clean although I also think that softened hard food should be ok.
Hi Oscar only had 1 tooth pulled and yes he is elderly he is 10 years old. 04/01/2003
My Corgi had a tooth pulled April 2 and after 3 days of soft food she refused to eat it. That was a shocker because she eats everything! I gave her the regular hard kibble and she was happy again.
I don't understand your vet recommending the soft diet for a month. Is your dog elderly? Did he have more than one tooth pulled?
Hi thanks for that maybe because of Oscar's age? he's 10 Paul rang me from the hospital our friend who is a retired vet and our house & dog sitter when we are away said it was okay to put water with his dried food and mash it up!. She did add though my vet is more than likely being over cautious with Oscar maybe because at the time I collected Oscar I did ask about his dry food maybe she misunderstood me or in the moment of my seeing Oscar and his kissing & cuddling his Dad I maybe misheard or missed her instructions on his dry food but I clearly remember her say 1 month before giving him his breakfast biscuit because it is hard and that bones were a no no!!!. Anyway at least I know I can give him his ekunuba dried food with water mashed up the his wet Barf Diet food later!. Thanks for replying!.
If it is a routine tooth extraction then I don't know why he would have to wait for 1 month. Last year Franklin broke one of his big pre-molars and had to have it extracted. They said soft food only for 3 to 5 days and then he could go back to his normal diet. Within 2 weeks he was totally healed and playing and chewing on bones again. A month seems like an awfully long time to me.
