Spring hike, lots of pictures!

Today was a very rare perfect spring day; about 68 degrees under a blue sky laced with puffy clouds. A perfect day for a hike with the Corgis! And a chance to try out my new camera.

There are lots of pictures but I shrunk them down so hopefully the page won't take too long to load.

The dogs were happy to get out off-leash.

They checked out the scenery.

They are both great on hikes. Maddie turns out to be a natural trail-finder; when we weren't sure where the trail had wandered to, she always found it. Neither of them wander too far.

They both found some delightful poop to roll in. Fox? Coyote? Not sure which, but they stank to the high heavens on the way home. They thought it was divine, of course. I caught Maddie in mid-roll, but there was not much point in trying to stop her.

This was the same hike we went on last fall, when I posted some pictures, but this time we found the correct trail. Some really cool standing stones:

None of the scenery could match the sight of Corgi backsides trotting up the trail.

The "al servo" focus allows even an idiot like me to get some nice action shots.

We found a pool, but it didn't wash off all the fox scat. Maddie looked like a hippo, standing in the water and grazing.

Nice view, with added Corgi:

After a three-mile hike, mostly in the sun, we were fortunate to have a spring-fed stream to cool the dogs off in.

And time to go home!

We are fortunate to have some nice hiking trails nearby that allow off-leash dogs, mostly because they are hunting areas. The only thing in season now, though, is turkeys, and the chances of someone being out looking for turkeys in mid-afternoon on a ridge-top heath barren, and mistaking a Corgi for a bearded tom, are quite slim!

This particular place is a Nature Conservancy preserve. The terrain is a bit difficult as it's mostly rock. The Corgis were great; it must have reminded them a bit of "home" (Wales). My knees are not happy tonight, though! There are some stunted trees and lots of dead ones (the saplings start growing, then reach a size that the land can't support and just wither). There's loads of wild blueberries, wintergreen, and sheep laurel, with a small scattering of rhododendron (R. Maximum) and the native mountain laurel. Apparently there are some rare birds and butterflies there, but I can only spot birds when they are eating at my feeder...

Thanks Beth, looking at those pictures made my evening! They both look like they are having the time of their lives! I keep trying to find some dog friendly trails around my area but no luck yet.
