The itch that just wouldn't go away..until now

I know its been awhile since our last post so I figured I better update and tell you all what's been going on with our little boy. For months now, he had been very itchy and would scratch and bite constantly and it recently got worse. It became so bad that we couldn't even sleep at night because he'd be scratching and moving the bed so much, we'd put him on the floor and could hear him constantly and he'd still keep us up, so we ended up having to put him out in the hall in his cage until morning so we could finally get some sleep. We had wondered it was just dry skin or something since we've been using more heat and its now cold outside, but we weren't entirely sure. We decided to take him to the vet and finally see what was wrong with him. The vet told us just by looking at him that he has allergies and put him on some medication to try out on him to see how it treats him. He's been doing excellent with taking it. I put it in peanut butter and I don't even think he realizes that there's a little something else in there. He takes it like a champ. The vet was worried that he may have a behavioral reaction to it or he may become more thirsty or pee more often, but we really haven't noticed anything different until this morning when he woke us up because he really had to go out and ended up having a little accident right near the door, but that could have just been nature calling and not the meds talking. I'm going to be keeping a close watch and monitor him until the medicine is gone. We have noticed a huge difference in him. He doesn't scratch or bite hardly at all anymore. So last night, he spent the night in our room and on our bed and it was awesome. We finally got to sleep and have our best friend there with us. He's back where he belongs. I'm really happy that this medicine is working out. I'm sad that he has allergies though and that he'll have them for the rest of his life, but at least there's something to give him relief and make him feel better.

Christmas is coming and it'll be really special since it'll be Murphy's very first one and he gets to spend it with us. His first birthday is the next day so I plan on making him some special birthday pupcakes for him. I'm sure he won't understand the concept, but I know he'll enjoy them. I should also plan on making something for Chris too since his birthday is Christmas day, it's tough though with all of the chaos that that holiday brings. Maybe I'll do something a few days before or after. I think he deserves something great too.

We got Murph out and about in the snow yesterday. He was so excited. He kept getting it on his nose and running around trying to get some in his mouth and run around, getting us to chase him. He's the most adorable dog I've ever seen and he's so patient and loving. He's a great listener too. I'm glad he likes playing in the snow and I hope to have a lot more days of doing that with him.

Thanks for all of the very informative comments. I truly appreciate them. The medication that murphy is on is called Temaril-P. The vet said it is a combination of antihistamine and steroids. And his dosage is 1 tablet twice a day for 5 days, then 1 tablet once a day for 5 days and then 1 tablet every other day for 5 days. Not sure what might happen after that, but I know they're only a phone call away. The vet made it sound like Murphy only has seasonal allergies, but to what, i have no idea. And he told us how we can find out, but there's a lot of hoops to go through and probably a lot of money involved that we don't currently have. He said we could go to Cornell or Penn State and have him get blood tested from there. It just sounds like too much to really get into, especially now with the holidays coming up so quickly. I hope all of you have a great Christmas. Thanks for the kinds words.

Yes, please let us know what the medication is. I hope it is not prednisone. But am happy his itchiness is better. I would definitely be trying to figure out what is causing the itching. Try different foods with different ingredients etc. I do believe that they have tests they can do to figure out what he may be most allergic to. Good luck.!!

Sorry to hear that Murphy has the itchies. We have been dealing with the same problem with Tucker for about 9 mounths now. I have to agree with the other comments here to be careful how long Murphy is on prednisone. When Tucker is on it, he is better, but as soon as he comes off it he is back to itching again. We have changed his food to Vesion and potatoes. No corn or wheat in food or treats. And it is a little better. Good luck and keep us posted as to how Murphy does.

Too bad about the allergies but I'm glad he's feeling much better!

My guy Sparty has severe allergies. He was diagnosed about 8 years ago and we give him an allergy shot once a month and about once a year he needs prednisone. It is a very strong medication which should be used very carefully and only as directed. Can you try eliminating some wheat or corn to rule out some of the common food allergies? Sparty was tested and showed a high allergic reaction to so many common things that shots were really the only route. Good Luck!

My corgi Dax also has really bad allergies, and to what, I have no clue. I thought at first that he might have some sort of food allergy, since he had some adverse reacons to the kibble i was feeding him when i first got him (bloody diarrhea, upset tummy, very itchy, ect.) I now have him on a great new kibble called Orijen Regional Red, and he has been doing great without any stomach upset. However, he is still very itchy. My vet had me put him on prednisone, and it really helps him feel much better. I was reluctant to put him on any kind of medication, and was determined to find out the cause of his itching, but to no avail. My vet determined that it's some sort of airborne allergy, that will most likely be a year-round thing. Therefore, since I have no idea what your vet put your corgi on, just keep an eye on how your corgi's itchines is doing. I try to avoid keeping Dax on his medication regularly, and only give it to him as needed, since his itchiness tends to come and go, and also because he will probably be on it for the rest of his life. Prednisone, though it helps make Dax feel better, will most likely take at least 6 months off of his life, which is why I only give it as needed. Again, I'm not sure what your vet recommended, but just be careful about how much and how often you're giving your corgi their medication. I hope you have a great christmas!
