I will be moving out of my parent's house very soon in to a rental, depending on the job I am applying for. If all goes well, I was thinking of getting a cat to join the family (Maine Coon or Siberian). Now, I don't plan on getting the kitten until Wynstan is at least 8-12 months.

Is there anything I should do help Wynstan get along with the possible new addition? He travels with me to friends' houses that have cats and gets along with them well, I think he thinks they are just funny looking dogs.

Any help is appreciated.

This is the Maine Coon breeder I am looking at

PS Cool web site for the breeder. I decided to only take rescues anymore otherwise I would love a Maine Coon cat.

I have always had cats, strictly indoors, and dogs. My rules are, no chasing the cats unless the cat starts it. I enforce this by leashing the dog that does not stop when I say no. Sparty just ignores the cats but Izzy and Misty cuddle with one of them and they play with the other one. One thing to watch is if your cat has claws you will want to make sure you teach your dog not to tease the cat. A pushy puppy is more likely to be injured by the cat than the other way around. Otherwise your dog will probably be fine with the cat just make sure he can not get at the litter or cat food both will give a him loose stools and a tummy ache.

If you're getting a kitten, you won't have many problems, if any. I have heard corgis get along famously with cats. He will probably try to herd it, though! Be sure to monitor their play together and never EVER leave them alone together. Be very careful, too, if you let the kitten outside. My friend had a husky that was an angel to some kittens when they were inside, but outside, he killed and ate 2 before the owners noticed. It was tragic. As the cat becomes older, larger, and more able to defend itself, you will be able to leave both loose without supervision.

The kitten might/will probably be afraid of Wynstan. Don't force them together. Keep the kitten in a single room when you bring it home for a day or so. Introduce the kitten to Wynstan and Wynstan to the kitten by rubbing clean towels on each and leaving the kitten's towel in Wynstan's bed and vice versa. This is more important for the kitten and less important for Wynstan. The cat will come to warm up (or tolerate) to Wynstan in time. The largest concern is Wynstan harming the kitty... and with proper supervision, that shouldn't happen. Remember, the younger the two are introduced to each other, the better they will get along--or that's usually the case.

An adult cat (7+ months) will be more difficult to introduce but much better able to defend himself. It might just tolerate the dog and instill a great fear into his puppy dog heart. Haha. The towel method is a must at this stage. There will be blood, probably.

It's been suggested that you lather the dog in butter to make the cat associate the other with food... but I don't support this at all. Sure, it might work, but you'll have a buttery dog. Haha.

You can expect lots of fun and chasing games. I would just monitor them for awhile as Wynstan will be bigger but if he learns the rules...they can be best buds! I would maybe keep them separated when you're gone at 1st just to make sure as whatever kind of new addition could be accidentally hurt. My Livvy and a cat about her age just love to run and play...the cat runs up the tree and Livvy has to sit and wait...the cat runs down and they're off again! It is good that he sees cats now...keep on introducing them! Have fun!

I am interested to see what kind of feedback you get, as we are thinking about adopting an older cat sometime this year after or little boy gets a little older. :D
