Got Bitten by a Lab
Last night I took Shiro for a walk and noticed that there were two dogs in our neighborhood dog park. He loves to play, so we came over and before entering asked the owner if her dogs were good with puppies. She said yes. Shiro was very excited to meet them at first, but then they kinda lost interest in each other and were just walking around and running occasionally. At some point Shiro got under the Lab like he likes to do with big dogs all the time. Well it was a bad idea. I heard loud screams right away, the lab was pinning him down and chewing on his head! The owner screamed at the dog which didn't help. In fact, she was too calm and acted like it's not a big deal. I stepped towards the dog and wanted to grab him, but then I didn't know whether it'd bite me as well. Eventually she got her a$$ off the bench and grabbed her dog. All happened in about 5 seconds and Shiro was screaming the entire time. He ran away screaming too. The lab's owner said it never happened before and asked if Shiro's OK. I looked over him and didn't see any blood.
In the meantime she got her dogs and walked away without leaving her name and phone number.
When we got home the blood started to come out of his head and from under his nose. I took him to our vet just to make sure it wasn't anything serious. Thankfully he was fine overall. The hea wound was very close to the eye, so he got lucky. We got some antibiotic and NSAID and some topicals for the wound and the eye (it was scratched on the surface just a little bit).
He's fully recovered now, just looks like a bandit. I feel very sorry for him and that I didn't pull that stupid dog away from him. He might not have ended up with injuries then.
This is all very frustrating to me, especially the way this woman handled (or did not) her own dog and the situation. I ended up paying $200 for the vet's bill and as pathetic as it is, it was my last money for the next 2 weeks....
I called the aparment management, hopefully they can identify her and give me her phone number.
In the meantime she got her dogs and walked away without leaving her name and phone number.

I carry a little air horn on my person. I've only had to use it once when a dog was approaching very agressively with no owner in site, it worked like a charm the very loud high pitched noise scared it away. I think it only cost 8 dollars at my local boating store. I hope your little one a quick recovery

what an awful thing to happen- but at least you only lost $200 and not your puppy! I HATE when people do not control their dogs and take responsibility for them.

Thanks for your support guys. I do have a mace but I'd probably be odd to spray the dog in front of the owner. LOL Sound alarm sounds like a good alternative, I'll look into it. The only problem I have with it is that it will affect my dog as well. But I guess it's not as bad as being chewed up.

Sorry about the attack! I am glad Shiro is OK. You do have recourse against the other owner but it is hard to catch them and prove. You should make sure to get Shiro out around friendly dogs so you can minimize his emotional damage. I have to admit that I have been on the other side of that fence. Sparty bit my neighbor's cocker and the one she was taking care of on a couple of occasions. I was horrified but I have finally convinced my neighbor that tossing treats when Sparty is around is not a good idea. The cockers are slow and Sparty thinks if it is unclear whose treat it is then it is HIS! I also had another corgi that was nipped by a loose dog while we were out walking and she remained scared to death of strange dogs her whole life. I am always a little leary of dog parks for this very reason. Dogs that are normally great can become annoyed and hurt a smaller dog very easily. I like it when they have a smaller dog area but a lot of them don't. Hope everything works out well for you and Shiro.

So sorry for your little baby! You did the right thing. I always carry mace that has a dye inserted into it to mark the dog (person) who attacks. Years ago, I wish I would've had mace! A vicious dog was trying to attack my young son, and instead, broke my older Golden Retriever's leg. I ended up putting my beloved Heidi to sleep because she then went into kidney failure...I NEVER go anywhere without the mace. Hope this helps. Please take care. There are also electronic devices that let out a high pitch sound to stop dog barking and attacks. Ask your Vet what they also would recommend.

I understand full-well you wishing you had pulled the big dog off. But sometimes that can set them off even worse. I'm just glad your pup came through it with just a few injuries. It could have been much worse. A couple of things to note. (1) Try not to react when Shiro meets dogs again. It's hard not to be smothering in that situation when he's had such a bad experience. But, if you show/feel fear, Shiro will as well. (2) Try to get him into some situations with dogs that are friendly so he'll overcome the fear. It's kinda like getting back on the horse after you get bucked off. Good luck to you and Shiro.
