Inactivity after spay
Penny was spayed on Wednesday and did very well. They tell you no running, jumping, playing for 7-10 days after and I'm concerned because in order for me to do that with Penny I'd have to glue her to the floor! I have tried to keep her off the couch but she sneaks when I'm not looking...and I bought a stair to help her off the bed...which she ignored and just jumped off the normal way! How did your corgi's do after their surgery...any advice on how strict I should be with the activity instructions? I don't want her to hurt herself but also don't want to have to leash her to my side either! Thanks for any advice you can give!

UPDATE: She is ok. She has some type of bad bacteria in her system so she is on 2 meds, and a bland diet...and then a probiotic when she is done with that...they say she should be fine...just to keep her quiet for a few more days and monitor her...she did eat the food they gave me so that was good...whew! I was pretty worried!

Penny is sick. Ok so she has done really well after her spay...her incision looks good...she has been crated most of the last week...been eating and going potty normally. Last night she peed on the kitchen floor (never does that) and then pooped in the living room this morning after being out. It looked a little red...well I came home to check on her at lunch and she is pooping red diaherra (sp?)...I called the vet and she has an appt at 3:00...I'm worried sick...could it be a complication from her spay or something else entirely? UGH! (OH and she wouldn't eat this morning either...worried sick momma here!

Well as much as I felt guilty I did keep her crated up most of the day yesterday, and she slept for most of it...so far this morning she is behaving. Thank you so much again for all your insight...I appreciate it.

Unless you really want to pay for another expensive surgery keep he inactive! Complications after a spay can be quite dangerous!

I always pen mine. They are leashed when out of pen. If they are being good I might drop the leash, but first sign of jumping they have to be attached to mommy or in the pen. It doesn't last long, it just seems that way to the person.. The pups are fine, oh, but those sad eyes. Herniation, busted stitches, etc will delay healing time and you will have to keep her quiet even longer!!

I had a dog several years back that her incision started to rip. Although I guess the inside was stitched with dissolving stitches...I ran to the vet and he took a couple rolls of vet tape and wrapped her! I will never forget this I would put her in a pen or on a leash!

I was in hopes I might find suggestions here...We have been having the same issues with Riley. His surgery was a little more involved, he had retained testicles, so the vet had to go in and find the little rascals. Thank goodnes Riley will only wear his stitches 4 more days, then the vet will remove them. We have him on a leash whenever he goes outside, but, in the house, at times, he is a Zoom-Zoom boy! I think his incision is itchy and where the hair is growing back is probably itchy, too. I just rubbed Benadryl gel on his tummy, maybe that will help

If a spay incision opens up, it can be pretty bad. Remember she's had a complete hysterectomy. I kept Maddie penned or crated for most of the first week, except for several leash walks a day. I tried to take her out more often. If I was doing something like preparing dinner where I knew she'd just follow me around watching me, I'd let her loose for awhile then too, then back in her pen. We have two dogs and by the 4th day they kept trying to wrestle so we had to keep them separated.
I also had a heck of a time keeping her from jumping on the couch. She caught on to the fact that I would try to stop her, so to get around it she'd take a flying leap from the middle of the living room floor. So, back in the pen. She was fit to pop her buttons by the end of the two weeks, even with frequent leash walks, and she was nearly 5 years old when she was spayed, well past puppy hijinks stage.
The girls are a lot tougher than the boys; with a neuter it's not nearly as bad.
