Hello all,

The subject line pretty much sums it up. I took him in to a pet store today that has a shot clinic and a vet administered dewormer. Sure enough, earlier this evening there was a roundworm in his poop tonight (ewwww)! He supposedly had one round of deworming already administered by the breeder (we brought him home @ 8 weeks old, he's 11 weeks tomorrow). Is he probably okay or should I take him to the vet to be checked for other parasites? I was recently laid off so I'm extra tight on money right now. I know there's also medicine/vaccines you can buy online. Has anyone administered those on their puppy? Also it might be worth noting he's on k9 advantix now but did have lots of fleas when we brought him home...or so we found out on day 2. Argh!

I would recommend worming him again in about 2-3 weeks. Puppies almost always have parasites from mom when they come home and should be wormed 3 or 4 times, generally with each round of shots to get rid of all the roundworms. If he was covered in fleas he may also have tapeworm. I'd recommend a fecal to make sure he doesn't have coccidia or giardia. Petsmart carries drontal or droncit (I can't remember which one) that takes care of roundworm and tapeworms. Or just have the vet administer a worming dose again at the next vaccine series. You will likely see worms in his stool after each worming dose if he has a high worm burden.
Your vet would probably let you just bring in a stool sample to save on costs. If he's acting normally otherwise I don't think a vet visit is really necessary. You can also buy Panacur on drs.fostersmith.com, it's the same thing my vet gives.
Panacur works well for roundworms and is very safe to use.  Fleas carry tapeworms, so your pup may have these too.  They  do not shed eggs, so a stool check will not reveal them.  When a tapeworm is mature it will shed segments.  You can see them with the naked eye.  They look like  a moving grain of white rice on the outside of a fresh stool, so keep an eye on the stools for a period of time.  Tapeworm medications are harsher, so you might ask the Vet for the proper dose, according to your pup's weight. If you see the segments moving, you don't need a visit, or a stool check, just a weighing of the pup and the proper dose.  One dose will do,  unless the flea infestation continues.
Yeah they gave me a stool sample kit for the next time I bring him in. I am worried about the tapeworm thing though. My puppy seems pretty happy/healthy though running around like a crazy boy so maybe wait to mention the tapeworm/flea thing when I go in for his booster in 3 weeks?
You don't need to worry abut tapeworms unless you see signs of tapeworm segments on the fresh stool.  You can ask what kind of deworming was done  by the Vet, it may have been a general dewormer, not just for roundworms. You may also tell the Vet, at his next shot appointment in 3 wks, that  money is tight right now, so he can advise you on the best way to deal with the puppy under those circumstances.
On the website that lists what's included in each set of boosters, it lists specifically being a roundworm dewormer. Although, it also has a paragraph discussing how in the Bay area (where we live) that roundworms and tapeworms are by far the biggest problem, so maybe it does treat that. Either way, I'll ask the vet in a few weeks to be sure.

my newest puppy passed worms for 3 days after his wormer. it was gross. it was his second round of wormer after he has one 3 weeks before.

Gross. If anything else in my vicinity passed writhing poops I'd kill it with fire. My puppy passes noxious poops and I praise him for pooping outside and give him treats. Puppies are weird.

ROFLMBO!!
Toady had to do several rounds of dewormer ( i think  he needed 2 even after he started on his heartworm medication).
If he has had fleas and consumes one he can develop tapeworms. If that is that case take him to the vet and they will treat him. If you are doing "at home" heart worm and round worm treatments do them at 6, 8, 10, and 12 weeks old. I would suggest using the vet though. The fleas definitely make a huge difference and cause the tapeworms. If you are fully aware of the fleas then that is what is going on. Take your pup to the vet!
and yes, after they are de-wormed you will see them A LOT in their stool afterwards. This is a good sign that he is getting rid of them. But based on what you've said, your pup has tapeworms. No need to be worried. Just get him treated for fleas and tapeworms and you're good to go! Make sure your yard/house is also treated for fleas. You don't want eggs hatching and infesting your home.
I gave him k9 advantix and it worked great for getting rid of the fleas. I havent seen any since it took effect. I had first tried a combo of "natural" flea repellant spray and a flea collar, and neither worked but a weird pesticide in the collar got in my boyfriend's eye and constricted his pupil (scary!), so dont mess with that stuff. I havent seen any tapeworm segments in his stool but what would be a good, puppy safe tapeworm medication? I feel so bad for the little fella, getting stuck with needles and such lately.
