I would keep trying Petfinder.  I don't know how far you are willing to drive, but I know St Louis has a rescue organization:

The woman from Faery Tails is very nice...I was looking at adopting meg. She was willing to work with me even though I was several states away!   Good Luck!

Wait a minute -- they passed away after tail docking? How does that happen? How sad.

Dogs can die from having their tails docked:(  Something may have been done wrong!

Yeah :( I'm not sure either really but I was closely in contact with the breeder and she had said that has never ever happened to her before, and it was strangely only the females

You could also try contacting breeders in the area and see if they have any retired dogs they are looking to place.
