Back End (Legs) Issue...HELP!
Hi! My 8 year old, Cooper, has been having problems with his back legs. We noticed a few months ago that he was slow to get up and wasn't as spunky as he usually is. Then, it got worse. He started falling down the stairs and sometimes his back legs would just give out on him. We have taken him to the vet a couple times and he has another appointment tomorrow. He has had blood tests and x-rays but the vet doesn't see anything wrong. We have had him on Rimadyl (sp?) to try and help but it doesn't do much. We have crated him for a week and it doesn't help. He can no longer get on our bed or the couch. Sometimes he stumbles just trying to get up and walk. His back end seems so stiff and you can tell he is uncomfortable. It is heartbreaking to say the least!
Has anyone had something like this happen? I would like to get some ideas to discuss with my vet tomorrow.

Thanks for the info! Were they able to see Chloe's ruptured discs in the x-ray or did they have to do an MRI?

He done several tests and then told me that he would have to send her to a specialist in another city. They wanted $2,000 up front and I live pay day to pay day, so again that was heart breaking. She was in so much pain though just picking her up made her holler and bite in pain. I made the final decision to make her pain free. wasn't easy.

Sorry, that is terrible! He doesn't seem to be in pain but seems uncomfortable from not being able to get around well. He doesn't seem to hurt when they push on his back. I just read about DM and it sounds a lot like that!

Unfortunately it does sound a lot like DM. Poor guy. Crossing my fingers its something else and your vet can pinpoint the cause. It may be worth taking your x-rays to a neurologist or having them read by a certified radiologist to see if they can see something that a general practitioner may have missed. Good luck.

It could be a disc that is blowing-- definitely get more X-rays and stuff, and if at all possible, an MRI. Any hind end weakness is serious business for a Corgi. I hope you don't get bad news!

Sidney had hind end trouble 10 months ago; his was sudden and extreme and turned out to be a blown hip from undiagnosed hip dysplasia. He had FHO surgery and has since recovered. He can't walk as far without getting tired and will have lifelong arthritis; I love him so much and it was so hard to see him in pain. I feel for you and hope your news is a "best case scenario". It sounds like DM to me too. My one dog, Dillon, was a corgi mix and I'm pretty sure that's what was wrong with him. One day he just started shaking in his back legs, and we thought he was in pain so put him on pain medicine. Didn't work. It progressed over months to where he couldn't get up, walked really stiff, fell over quite frequently. We made it work for probably a year or more, but eventually he got basically Alzheimers and we had to put him down. I'm sorry...let us know how you are doing and what you find out. We all know how heart-breaking it is to see them sick in some way. If it is DM, like others have said, there are carts for them to help them walk. And we can help you find ways to pay for them...

Thanks Jennifer! Cooper is really stiff and will fall over or just lay there a lot which is not like him at all! I hope we can get a diagnoses quickly if this is DM so we can be prepared and give him the best chance of being as happy as he can be in his situation!
