So I always thought my sweet Penelope was a Pembroke until I went to bring her to get her shots and the vet said that she was a Cardigan because she had a tail. The woman that I got her from told me that she chose not to dock Penelope and her siblings' tails. She said something about it becoming more popular nowadays. Now I'm totally confused?

I know some Pembrokes are born without tails and most who do have tails get them docked. What do you guys think Penelope is? To me, it doesn't matter because she's still my adorable little corgi, but I just wanted to hear some insight.

You can see more pics of her on our website at www.penelopethepembroke.tumblr.com

Breeders trying for blue merles wouldn't really have any effect on the number of tri-colors, as the only "acceptable" pairing for producing blue puppies is a blue x black dog. This would produce both black and blue puppies. I believe tan points are recessive to brindle which is why the tri-color is less common in cardigans.

My cardi Luke is a classic Tri.

@Jane. haha. what do I know? I didn't think I ever saw a tri cardi. I have to go back and look at your photos. What about Edward in Accidental Tourist, Cardi of Pem? I think I will remove my comment pronto!  ;-)
I could only find one short clip of him, but with some extra googling it appears that he was definitely a cardigan named Bud. He was on the show Dharma and Greg too apparently. :)
Oh Jane. Thank you. I loved that movie, esp. Edward! Haven't seen it in years, but I remember thinking his head looked more Pem than the typical Cardi. But what do I know? I've owned Pems since 1969 and never knew if left undocked they would have beautiful tails. I thought they just had a bob. When I got my first Corgi, he was one of only 2 in our city. No one knew what he was. Back then we'd stop the car if we ever saw a Corgi being walked. Now in my neighborhood there are many Corgis. I see them all the time in commercials, magazines. Your corgis are adorable. How did you ever get them to pose so nicely for your profile photo?
Wendy, I used to think the exact same thing until we met Sidney!
@ Geri - Oh good! I guess you can teach an old dog new tricks. haha. We used to say the Pems are born w/o tails and the Cardigans are the Corgis w/ tails. Goodbye to simple categorizing. I was clueless to the size an undocked Pems tail would be. I was also told that tail docking, done properly within a day or two after birth, was relatively painless.
And Geri, hope you know that I was referring to ME not you as the old horse!
@Angela - I stand corrected. I had never seen a tri cardi, but we all know what happens when one assumes! I'll amend my comment pronto.  ; )

...That vet doesn't know what he/she is talking about. Penelope is obviously a Pembroke...

Cardigans are slightly bigger than Pembrokes, and their ears are rounder and stand at a different angle.

That's also not a Cardigan tail. Cardigan Corgis have fluffier, straight tails, and Penelope's is a little bit curled. When Pembrokes have tails, their tails are curled.

PEN IS A PEM w. a tail. No doubt about it. Go to Google or YouTube and type in Cardigan Corgi. You'll see that Cardigans are bigger, different shaped ears and a different overall conformation.

Correct me if I'm wrong (again! ;-) but, I also believe that Cardigan front paws turn out slightly and the Pem standard calls for the front paws not to turn out.

Your baby, I must agree with all of the others,  has pembrook facial and body structure characteristics but lucky girl....she got to keep her pretty tail!  ^,,^
