The same thing happened to me.  Bento was given the bordetella because we were going to take him to puppy headstart, and the vet wanted to make sure Bento is protected.  When we got home, I made the mistake of getting a little too close too his face and therefore nose and got a healthy dose of puppy snot and spit.  

 

Over night, I had the sore throat, itchy cough, and a runny nose.  I usually do not ever get any colds during the summer time, so I blame the vaccine.  On a happy note, it didn't last very long though, just 2 - 3 days, and the symptoms were not severe.

My Vet has always warned that we shouldn't let our dogs lick us for 24 hours after a live intranasal vaccine.  Yes, it is possible for the illness to pass from dog to human.  According to this site, humans (usually with weak immune systems) "...can become infected with Bordetella bacteria when they are in close contact with a dog that has recently been vaccinated against kennel cough."

Well .. really unfortunate story but my parents took their Pomeranian in for it's regular check up -- their dog never had a bordetella. They got the intranasal and a couple hours later dog got horribly sick t home and died within the day. Really unfortunate situation and they can only guestimate it was one of those really obscure adverse reactions.

Harley became ill after his first nasal bordetella a few months ago.  He vomited among other things.  I posted here as I could see he was not himself and didn't feel well.  Fortunately, it passed.  Next year, I will ask for the shot instead of the nasal.  My Vet seemed preoccupied talking to a student Vet instead of giving me much information.

The only reason mine has always warned about it is because she knows that I have small children.  Children and the elderly (or those with compromised immune systems) are usually the only ones that would need warning about it.  Seems like they should just warn everyone, though, since they have no way of knowing who will be around the vaccinated dog.

This issue could be of significant importance to people with compromised immune function, I sent your comments to a friend like that who also has dogs.

yeah online it said part of the intranasal bordetella vaccine was related to Whooping Cough so it could have the potential to get you pretty sick if you have a compromised immune system. I always do injectable vaccines because when you give the intranasal vaccine you are double vaccinating for a component that is also in the distemper vaccine combo. I work at a vet and had NO IDEA that you could potentially get sick from bordetella, good to know

Fortunately, I don't have a compromised immune system. I don't fall into the more susceptible age brackets either. I think it came from him directly putting his face all over my face immediately after he got the vaccine. He's very loving, so when I went to pick him up to put him on the table for the vet he was "kissing" and porpoising me all over my face. I don't know if just petting him would have passed it on (hand to mouth or nose contact). Oh well, hopefully it won't last long. I do think I may advise the vet to warn people though, and I won't be letting him lick me or get near my face if he gets this vaccine in the future.
