I have two corgis. The first, an adult male, doesn't have any major health issues. I feed him California Naturals grain-free lamb dog food. My other, a female who just turned one year old, had been on high quality puppy food until this Jan. We moved and couldn't find her brand of food out here so we switched her to Cali Natural as well since she was about 10 months at that time.

Not surprisingly, we started having runny, watery stool. Around the same time Pixel (the female) also consumed a stuffed toy. We took her to the vet for an exam to make sure there weren't any blockages. There weren't, so she was fine and the toy passed with no issues. After that we started feeding her Flora Fauna packets in combination with the ID (I think) prescription canned dog food. We also eliminated most of her toys, chews, and treats. She doesn't have access to raw hides or anything else now. After the prescription food ran out the vet told us to put her back on the normal diet. We switched her back slowly using the last of the canned food.

Several months passed and we're still having issues with runny stool. We've been back to the vet for tests and exams, but nothing shows up as being out of the ordinary. She doesn't have worms, any recognizable allergies, or any types of hereditary disease. I started giving her the flora packets again with some canned dog food about a month ago, but still we're having runny crap and noxious dog farts all the time. I consulted a dog nutrition store and switched her over to Orijen. This helped with the farts but her poop is still runny.

I'm at a loss. I can't think of anything else to do. I measure the food, so she's not over fed. She gets food on schedule in the morning and evening. She has exercise and doesn't get any treats that could upset her stomach. Has anyone else had this issue? I love Pixel to death but I'm really, really tired of runny poop.

Our Doberman has a very delicate stomach. She is on perscription Science Diet i/d and the problems disappeared. It is the only thing that keeps her from having" room clearing" gas and runny poop. I no longer try to find out why it works, I am just happy that it does!

Has the vet tested for Giardia?  Or suggested putting her on a "bland diet" which is mostly just chicken and rice for a few days... it gives their stomach a rest.  Pazu had runny stool for a while because he had giardia as a puppy.  He also swallowed a toy, so I thought it was blockage or something.  He got an x ray.  I switched his food from Avoderm to Wellness.  In between I had him on the bland diet which seemed to help his system balance out.

How to Make a Bland Diet...

Bland foods include

1/3 meat

  • Cooked meats that are very low in fat such as chicken (you can also boil hamburger, which will remove all the fat)

2/3 rice or other bland grain

  • Cottage Cheese

  • White Rice (some will do better on cooked oatmeal)

  • Do not add any oils or fats to the diet at this point

Hi Rockstar, when you've exhausted food allergy / bugs as possible causes, you may also want to look for stress factors. Moving to a new environment, additional human / dog in the household, separation anxiety, loud high pitch noise...etc. can also trigger runny poop.
Murray has the same problem although his poop is just mushy and only sometimes runny on any food that I have tried other than Science Diet Lite.  I tried it in desperation because it was the highest fiber food I could find.  I tried adding fiber to other foods, but that didn't work.  Funny thing,  he can snack on quite a bit of people food and treats and is usually OK as long as he gets the Science Diet.  I would love to get him off it.  I may try some of the suggestions but it is very discouraging.  He is healthy and fit except he sheds clear more than any of the other 5 Corgis we have had. I am afraid of anal gland problems if he has continual mushy poop.  Usually gas has not been a problem.
Could the canned food be maybe causing the problem,  how much canned food do you feed?  Just a thought.

A couple of thoughts:

How often do you take her out to go potty? Because we strongly enforced good potty behaviors when we brought Marcus home, he sometimes strains himself to poop just because outside = poop to him. The resulting poo is pretty squishy.

Marcus prefers "moist" food, but canned dog food gave him runny poop as well. We eventually got the Proportions Stew packs, but you could replace the wet food with yogurt, pumpkin puree, or cottage cheese, all of which are good for loose stool.

We adopted a pug/beagle with a similar problems. After checking everything we could think to check, we have sort of reached a solution. My vet says he has seen a few dogs that just have to live on a daily low dose of metronizadol. Wiigi also takes a probiotic daily. His poop is not perfect, but it doesn't resemble a cow patty either. Some days are better than others, but he has gone from 12 pounds to 17 and is easily holding his weight. Vet says a low dose for the rest of his life should not cause problems for Wiigi's health. Maybe this would work for your baby.
My first thought would be to get a second opinion :/
