Allergies
Hi guys!
So Caesar seems to have an allergy of some sort. I took him to the vets a few times last summer and they scraped his stubbies to see if he had anything and they couldn't find anything specific. He did end up getting a yeast infection after a few months of chewing his paws raw. They put him on steroids and told me that if he gets it again this year that I should take him to get looked at for allergies at a specialist. So he usually gets it around July-ish. I was surprised that it took him this long to start gnawing. Low and behold this morning he surely started!
My question is do any of your Corg's have this little allergic problem and do you do anything to ease their itchiness?? I just hate to keep putting him on steroids, but if that's basically what I have to do I will do it, but if there is something else that would sooth the itch and have him not start the hot spots I'd be happier doing that. Of course I know we're not vets and I will be taking him to the vet if he continues today/tomorrow, but I was just curious about your history/findings with allergies.

What kind of shampoo does he use when he gets into the tub? It might be that. Or food. Is he getting into something different than normal?

He's like a goat. So honestly he's not getting into anything abnormal for him, but he definitely could have ate something outside without me knowing about it. Food has still been the same since I got him. Just seems to flare up in July/August time.And funny you mention shampoo cause I actually used his vet prescribed shampoo last night and yet this morning it happened. Maybe he's dry too from me washing him last night? I dunno.

Hi Caesar's Ma, the best thing to do is get him allergy tested, it can be air borne, pesticides in the grass, fleas, food, cleaning solution... you get the picture. Get to the root of the problem.

Try Wal-finate from Walgreens. Murray gets 1 1/2 twice a day when his allergies start in August and we continue it til it freezes. He weighs about 32 lbs. Works really great for him and it's cheap. The vet originally sold us the doggie form of the same thing so I know it is safe. It wasn't much more expensive at the vets.

Thank you for your help! Is this like any other allergy medicine that is over the counter, but just Walgreens brand or something a bit different?
He has been good so far. I was able to catch the mini hot spot quick enough that it heeled pretty quickly and I have been on him like white on rice after he goes outside. I was prescribed a special shampoo for his stubbies and we have been using that on Saturday nights because he's outside longer on the weekends then week days. So far so good, but we have a bit til it freezes.

Oh boy! Yours sounds even worse than Caese's is/was. I hate seeing them go through that and being unable to fully help. Glad you got into the vets quickly and hopefully it can ease his discomfort. Let us know how things go tomorrow!

We had our Sparty allergy tested about 10 years ago and found that he was allergic to many, many things (grass, dust etc). We have been giving him allergy shots once a month ever since and he does very well. The shots are easy to give, just under the skin. The testing was a little expensive but the serum is not bad and he has a good quality of life because of it.

Oh gosh! So your guy was allergic all year long? Even in the winter he needs the shots? My last dog had diabetes and I am so relieved to not give him shots after every meal anymore. I miss him dearly, but that is one relieving thing as bad as that sounds. Do you give him the shots the same way? In the neck scruff or does it matter for the allergy shots? Glad you got to the root of the problem and he has some relief. If Caesar ever got that bad I'd obviously do that same thing. I am lucky right now I am able to curb it and he is not showing any more signs at this point.

Sparty is even allergic to house dust so yes he is allergic all year long but certain times of the year were worse. The shot is under the skin in the scruff of his neck so pretty easy to administer in spite of what a "drama queen" he is. The concept behind the shots is to inject allergens at a low level year round so he develops an immunity. He was a mess before we did it. He scratched himself bloody all around hes head and neck. The specialist said corgis are not prone to a lot of allergies like some breeds but poor Sparty was highy allergic to so much (thistle, dandelions, grass etc)

Will he be able to be off the shots at some point down the line because the injection would build up in his system? Or is it pretty much a life long thing for him? I'm glad you guys at least found something that would ease him from the itchiness and annoyance of it all.

Poor Caesar! Logan our 5 yr old corgi has allergies too. In fact he just went back to the vet today. We have had chronic ear issues for 14 months and recently skin issues.
My vet's plan today: blood work (T4) to check thyroid function which can cause issues similar to allergies), shampoo with Pyoben 2-3 times per week, ear washes daily, Gentizol ear oint, hydroxyzine (for itching), prednisone, simplicef (antibiotic).
I have tried every limited ingeg. diet under the sun with little to no improvement. My vet said that the LID diets are not truly hypoallergenic and that if we are dealing with a food allergy they would put him on a prescription diet.
Logan has gained 7# since last year too. He weighs 42#!! He never gets snacks or table food and I walk him 30 min. per day 7 days a week. So maybe it's thyroid? But I feel for you and I can relate.
I'll keep you posted on his thyroid testing.
