Mosquitoes are about to eat Bubba up. The other day I was taking some pics of him arount 5-6:00  pm and didn't notice until I enlarged one of the photos in the camera's viewvfinder and counted 12 mosquitoes on him!! Some were on his ears, chest and feet and a couple on his muzzle. They seem to be more of a problem between 4:30-7:30 pm for some reason.

Short of investing in some expensive trap, I'm mot sure fwhat to do about this and suggestions would be appreciated. I've already talked with his vet about it and didn't get any encouraging words since I knew you couldn't put DEET on him and they didn't really have any suggestions. I even made a mix of vinegar/water and sprayed it on his back but that didn't seem to help. Then I tried putting a dryer sheet under his collar but after a few rolls in the grass, that came off. I give him Intercepter heart worm meds but, I still don't like them flocking all over him biting him in numerous places...just makes me nervous seeing them.

We had the same problem here and now that it hasn't rained for a week or 2 things have gotten better. I have a human mosquito spray made with mouthwash, joy dish detergent and water....I will try to find the recipe. It won't hurt them at least!
Advantix repels ticks, fleas, and mosquitoes. You can also buy fly spray or mosquito spray formulated for horses, many are for use on dogs as well. Make sure to religiously give him his heartworm medication, buy it from a reputable source, and have a heartworm test done annually. Heartworm is transmitted by mosquitoes and sometimes the medication isn't 100%, but an annual heartworm test will catch the disease before it becomes life threatening if he does happen to get it and novartis will pay for treatment if you continually give interceptor and have an annual test done.
Hi D46, add 1 drop of eucalyptus oil diluted to 1 cup of warm water, rub it in Bubba's coat, let it air dry. You can also plant a few citronella candles around the yard. Peak biting periods occur just before and after sunset, and again just before dawn. Each species has its own peak period of biting. e.g: Tree-hole and Asian tiger mosquitoes feed during daylight hours in or near shaded or wooded areas.

Heartworms scare me to death as I've seen them at the vet's office and know what they can do. At Bubba's age(turned 7 yesterday) he'd probably have a bad time with the treatment. He gets his meds consistently 12 months a year as I've seen mosquitoes here even in early December.

I've herd of citronella candles and suppose you can get those at good ol' Wally World. I'll have to pick some up. Where do you find the eucalyptus oil-drug store perhaps?  "Tree-hole and Asian tiger mosquitoes feed during daylight hours in or near shaded or wooded areas." This is where he mostly gets bombarded-under the large maple tree out back where there's shade but, I have seen them follow him into the sunlight if he started moving. Two or three you can understand but 12-14 was ridiculous.

I keep our dogs on Advantix when I take them to the east side of the Cascade mountains -- tick country -- and I don't know if that stuff repels insects -- but I've been in bug conditions (black flies mostly) that were quite bad, and they could not get through the dog's coat except on the snout, maybe ears.  I try to avoid bugs by keeping above 5500'.  They have not been a huge problem for us.  But for myself, I do carry 100% DEET starting, say, July; don't use it much.

This is not heartworm country, so we can afford to be a little sloppy.

I like the 5500' idea, John. The tallest point in Wisconsin is 1951' (our mountain), but it does have an observation tower on top.

Have you seen the film "The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill But Came Down a Mountain"? Maybe something like that could help us out here.

We use Revolution for flee and heartworms.

As for mosquitoes I make a mixture of 2drops lemongrass oil, 2drops eucalyptus oil, 1 cup water (sometimes I add jojoba oil for my skin) and put this in a mist bottle and use this on the dogs and my husband. to cover the dogs head and your face please spray into your hand and pat on skin/fur. Avoid eyes!

Lots of good ideas here. Chirs, I saw a couple of those links when I did a search about this and can attest there is no water in the yard anywhere that would cause these varmints to multiply. The guy out back has a couple of old crates for dogs that he has stashed on his side of the fence and I noticed there was some stagnant water in them so, I sprayed them with bug killer.

Some of the products mentioned I have no idea where to find...like eucalyptus oil lemongrass and tree oil. Where do you find this stuff? I was warned by the vet NOT to use DEET at all.

We can find the oils in the natural food part of our grocery store and I have also ordered online through Puritan's Pride!
Puritan Pride-why didn't I think of that. I order from them often. I'll look in the catalog they recently sent and just order online. Thanks for jogging my memory. The problem around here is that mosquitoes are around nearly all year long to one degree or the other-summer being the worse, of course so, I need to nip this in the bud. I've seen some mosquito traps but again, most seem pretty expensive as soom were over $200-300.
