Breeders that don't dock
Hi there. :] I'm looking to bring home a corgi sometime within the next year or so, and figured I'd start doing my research now. Recently I've become intrigued with Pembrokes with tails, after seeing pictures of ones from countries where tail docking is banned. I was wondering if anyone knew of any breeders here in the US that didn't dock tails as well? I know it'd probably be pretty rare, since most breeders breed for show, and tails would be non standard... But if anyone knows of any breeders that don't, please let me know. I live in Southern California, but I'm open to breeders from farther away if they're reputable and willing to ship. If fate would allow it, I would love a fluffy boy with a tail. :]

Well ... we wanted a corgi, and the most easily available to us was a cardi, with a tail, and we adore her!!

Thanks for your comment, Sarah. Seems Pembrokes are a little easier to find here. Actually I don't think I've seen a Cardigan in person yet around me... But I'm thinking about looking into Cardigans, but after I get my first Pembroke at least. Haha.
Completely unrelated, but one of my old roommates is also a Sarah McC____. Haha.

I have yet to meet a cardi, and reading Blacksheep Cardigan's page makes me almost want a cardi from her instead of another pem... $1100 is kind of over my budget especially with all the other things I'll have to buy for the puppy and vet checks/etc. Wish I was closer to her, so I could visit them and get to know her and the corgis more. Indiana seems to hava an OK number of Pembroke breeders (especially in Illinois, where I'm able to drive to pick up puppy) but Cardis are almost unheard of :-(
Louisville Kennel Club does have a dog show coming up in March, so hopefully I can make it out to Herding group day and talk to some people who can point me in the right direction for another corgi.
Also, does anyone know whether it is acceptable to take a non show dog along when you visit a dog show? I'm wanting to take Scout b/c she's well behaved and loves people and I think she'd have a blast.

Thanks for your comment, Emily. I totally agree! I was looking at Blacksheep Cardigan's page and found myself wanting to buy a cardi from her too! But no I need my Pem first!! Haha. Yeah, Cardigans seem pretty rare... I don't think I've ever seen one in person. Well, I guess if I can't find any good Pem breeders out here in California, I could always try Illinois breeders (my parents still live in Chicago). Haha. But then again maybe not... It is a long trip.
I'm actually going to a dog show tomorrow! Gonna see if I can talk to some corgi breeders. I did look this up and most dog shows won't allow dogs that aren't competing to enter. Unless they're potential show pups that're just accompanying show owners. People do it though. Supposedly you can get away with it if you tell them the dog is competing in agility or something. But from what I've read, it's kinda frowned upon. Then again, it's usually with dogs that don't know how to behave, or owners that don't know how to make their dogs behave. :\

I actually didn't get to go since the person who was suppose to take me felt sick in the morning. But next time! Yeah, I feel somewhat impatient because all my friends are getting new puppies lately. Haha. But I'm not gonna settle for just any dog out there. :]

Yeah, I absolutely believe that. Looking at the my friends' dogs, I know they got them because they really wanted puppies right now and the dogs happened to be there. But as much as I really want a pup now, I'd rather wait for the perfect one. :] Plus, I've already waited more than 15 years... what's another few months? Haha.

I don't know whether this breeder information was passed on to you as requested but you could try Hatu Corgis ID (Brubaker) I have seen what appear to be nice photos of undocked Welsh Pems from this breeder
From whomever you purchase, always check for temperament, necessary breed health tests and good conformation (a breed standard is not necessarily "good"! eg in different breeds - roach backs (spinal/hip problems), heads too big/wide (can't deliver without caesarian), too wrinkled (skin problems) etc.
Unfortunately breeding quality, healthy dogs with good welfare comes at a cost. It can involve large Vet bills if there is a birthing problem, health tests (eyes. hips. bloods etc) that the sire and dam may need pre-mating for the breed, registration, stud fee, plus weaning food up to 8 weeks, 1st immunisations, tattooing/microchipping etc.; then there may only be 1 or 2 delivered so financially it could become a total monetary loss.

Thank you very much for your comment, ADA. I have not heard about this breeder yet, but I will be sure to contact them. Do you happen to remember where you saw pictures of their dogs? I've tried looking up the breeder, but I haven't been able to find much past an email.
I'll be sure to try and look out for all those things before I make my purchase. I can't say I'm completely knowledgeable on corgi standards, but I suppose that's precisely why I need to find a reputable breeder so I can trust the breeder instead. At least with those breeders, I can know they're breeding for the improvement of the breed and not just to make money.

I don't know much about her other than many people who have bought puppies from her all offered nothing but positive feedback, and a couple even gave me their personal contact information and a lady even told me to call her to talk if I ever had any questions.
The lady herself seems to kind of be short in her responses, but never rude and she sent me her contract with no problems.. I don't exactly agree with sooooome of the stuff in it, but that's my personal preference:) I was thinking of getting a male BHT from her in the future, but I am not so sure now. Again, personal preferences.. Good luck tracking down what you want!
