I have to say, over the last 9 months of having my first Corgi (Darcy's turning one year old soon), I've been THOROUGHLY entertained. Laying on her back, groaning, grunting, squealing, "talking," digging -- she seems to do something new and unusual every day! I've had Beagles and Shelties before, but they NEVER did half the quirky things Darcy does!
Well, here's one thing that just puzzles me. We'll be outside, and she sniffs the ground, seems to pick a VERY particular spot, then dives head-first into the ground, rolls over on her back, and rolls and rolls on top of this patch of ground. Gets up, sniffs it again, rolls again! So weird!!
I went over to see what she was rolling on top of, and all I could see was a dead black beetle! She went to that same exact spot a couple more times over the next week, and was rolling all over it. Such a silly dog!
I was just wondering if this is a "Corgi" thing?? And is there any rhyme or reason to it??

My mix Hershi does this (She's lab / beagle / aussie / whatever) Scout is just as cute with her stumpy little legs rolling around on the ground. I secretly think Hershi has some corgi in her... not too far of a leap as we have no idea anyway. :-) ^. .^
They usually head dive/roll around in something smelly. Or dead. Or something smelly and dead. When they're not so pinpointed to a particular spot, I think they're just being silly. :)
Silly rolling:

More silly rolling (with a toy):
Aj, that is TOO funny! Love those videos! Silly, silly Corgis....
Ode De Bunny or deer pee most likely...although Sparty loves to roll in fresh cut grass and snow too. They do love to roll!
I've never been able to find what she's rolling on, but it is definitely a specific spot that she has to hit just right. One time Snickers found something next to a planter. She sniffed it, got herself in exactly the right position so that her shoulder would be on THE spot, turned her head, started to roll ...and hit the planter. She straightened back up, found THE spot, got in position again, started to roll and hit the planter.... over and over. Hilarious!
Franklin rolls like a crazy man. Usually I can't even find anything that would be of interest and 9 times out of 10 there is no new smell on him that I can smell. He LOVES to roll after he plays in teh river. He gets in the tall grass and rolls and rolls and rolls. And every morning and every night he rolls on the carpet. He sometimes misjudges his distance to the ground and attempts a run and roll and will face plant instead. It's pretty funny.
Corgi's are a goofy breed for sure, but you got to love them for it. Where else can you get such great entertainment. My two roll around like that inside and out. The rug gets a face slide and roll several times per day. It could be a string, treat, ice, or nothing at all. I believe all dogs have to try and get a little stinky on them when ever they can. My basset Snoopy would hit the horse poop every time we visited my aunt. I believe it goes back to the wolf/dog era when smelling like your prey helped get dinner.
My three, especially Nimh, are definite rollers. Nimh makes it into a squiggle grunt yip stumpy paw waving extravaganza!
Archie does it, too. They are definitely smelling something we...thankfully... don't ALWAYS smell. I believe it is a "call of the wild" thing, and I have known a lot of dogs to do it. My cocker spaniel used to to do as well. We want them to smell soapy and fresh and puppy-ish, like something we can hug and kiss and bury our noses into. THEY want to be reminded that they are the best hunters and protectors around, so they favor the scent of the kill.
It's kinda like men who would much rather smell like sweat and axle grease.
