pro heart shot
i was wondering if anyone has gotten the pro heart shot for their dogs. the vets in my area no longer carry the pill form for heart worms and i dont trust the topical heart worm prevention. i know, its weird but its just how i am so the vet i work at asked if i would like to do pro heart for baden as it last for 6months and is only $20 so it saves me a lot of money and having to shove a pill down his throat every month. i know it was recalled awhile back so it does make me a little hesitant

o wow, that chart is shocking! i would love to stay on the pill but the problem is, is that no vet near us is carrying them. so the only prevention i can get is a topical or the shot

You can buy heartgard or other similar products on drsfostersmith.com and they will contact your vet for the prescription info.

I see you live in Arkansas--I know you can get the pills still in Missouri, so you might considering crossing the border.

just have your vet write you a prescription so you can by the product on the internet. Ask them for a list of reputable online pharmacies, some are bogus and sell bogus products. Two good ones that come to mind are drsfosterandsmith and 1800petmeds. Its a shame they aren't selling pills in your area anymore, its one of the worst places for heartworm disease, makes NO SENSE. :-(

i agree. i just dont get how they push and push for heartworm prevention if they offer no pills. most of the people that walk into vet and get told that they no longer have pills walk out because they are like me and dont trust the topical.
i will ask them and see if they will write me a prescription for both baden and dollar as she only has 3 more months left of interceptor (i bought them on base but they also no longer carry them)

i also remember awhile back they said that 1800petmeds were getting there supplies from china and even though the package said frontline, the tube contained other chemicals

another think my vet said is that ive heart and heart guard are not as effective in my area anymore. im not sure what to do :(

Your vet lied to you about 1-800-Petmeds. Some online pharmacies are not legit and sell expired product, product who's labels are incorrect, don't store or ship the product properly so it is no longer effective, etc. But 1-800-Petmeds is not one of them. You can look on this website for a list of veterinary verified online pharmacies:

if the pharmacy is not on this list, DO NOT BUY FROM THEM. As you can see both Drs. Foster and Smith and 1800petmeds are on the list. Basically they went through an accredidation process to verify the products they sell are what they say they are and that they are those same products sold by veterinarians. Don't let your vet scare you into not buying online from a reputable source. Also, if your vet won't write you a prescription go elsewhere. Tell them your concerns and seek another vet that is willing to write you a prescription or that sells the pills. It is not worth risking your pets health. If your vet really wanted to continue keeping the business of concerned pet owners they could sign up for Vetcentric which is also an online pharmacy but they deal directly with your vet hospital. Heartworm in the central united states do seem to have developed resistance to Ivermectin so it would be a good idea to get interceptor instead. This resistance is because people don't give the ivermectin medications as labeled (i.e. give it every other month or every few months, split the pill and only give half, etc) and so only the resistant worms survive the medication and over time a resistant population has developed. You must give the medication as labeled, every 30 days. It is technically effective for 45 days, but you should give it monthly for maximum protection. The 45 day efficacy is for those who forget to give the meds and end up giving them a week or to late (like me! Lol) Here is an article on heartworm resistance:

just a note on the article though, advantage multi is only effective if given to dogs that don't do a lot of swimming or baths and when it is given correctly. Many owners apply the medication incorrectly so it isn't as effective. I'd stick with a pill since its a fool proof method and just switch active ingredients from Ivermectin to something else.
and as an aside as I write this I realized I forgot to give my boy their meds! Lol, thank goodness for the 15 day grace period, I'm only 7 days late on the meds lol.
