My corgi Gus was just diagnosed with hip dysplasia. We had noticed he wasn't putting much weight on his right rear foot, and took him to get checked out. They took x-rays, and the vet just called with the bad news. Gus is only 4, and I feel so sad about this, espcially after just losing Sandy to a long, debilitating illness. Does anyone out there have tips on coping with this? They are going to put him on glucosamine, and an anti-inflamatory. Any food and/or supplement tips? Thanks so much.

Rufus is 2, and he was diagnosed  with elbow dysplasia. It's seriously the most painful thing to watch them in pain.

Rufus has been on Flavocin for a while now, and in about a month or two of those supplements, ALL his limping has gone away. I haven't even had to use all the Rymodyll that the vet prescribed to me...

You can check it out, but I know Rufus loves it, and it's def worth the try :)

I also  had my dog on Flavocin. Saved his life. He was on Rimadyl and tramadol and still in excruciating pain from hip dysplasia. A few weeks on Flavocin and he was literally a new dog. Back to being a playful, happy lovebug. We were at the point of considering putting him to sleep because he was so painful when I ran across it and I am SO GLAD I did. It bought him almost 3 more years, and in the end we had to put him down due to a freak accident and not pain from dysplasia.

Thanks for the advice on Flavocin-I am going to give it a try! Gus is turning 8 this week and doing remarkably well. I find what really helps is keeping his weight down and lots of exercise. I also use hyaflex when he seems to be having a hard time, and that seems to help, along with Vet's Best hip & joint formula.

Glad to hear about Flavocin.  I may try that next.  Chester is 6 but has been dealing with hip dysplasia and front leg joint issues for the past several years.  His front wrists take his weight after he dislocated a toe, which never healed right with a cast, so with the toes separated that put more pressure on his wrists to carry his weight..and since his back left hip is on an off stiff, hes got real gait problems. Dr. said there really is not much you can do other than try to give him excersise to the best of his walking ability and help him with inflammation and pain.  So hes been on Duralatin which is an anti inflammatory (milk based) and trymodol on his bad days..guess these pain killers only work for so long.

Thanks for the advice-I am going to give Flavocin a try! Overall Gus is doing very well-I find that keeping him a healthy weight and lots of exercise, along with supplements, really help. He turns 8 this week!

Hmm I may try that Flavocin too. I've had my guys on missing link plus but noticed zero difference.

Does your vet have experience with corgis?  I've heard that if you show an OFA radiologist a hip x-ray of a normal corgi, they'll say, "hip dysplasia".  Normal corgi hips are borderline dysplastic.  Second opinion?

So sorry to hear this. Our Newfie was diagnosed with hip dysplasia plus elbow dylspasia before he was 2 years old. They told us he would probably have to be put down by the age of 4 if we didn't do surgery. Due to expense and the fact I had watched dogs suffer after such surgeries, we opted to treat only with GLC and tried to keep him VERY lean. We also allowed him to exercise and develop the muscles around his bad joints by swimming. He enjoyed a very happy life until he was 7, which is almost the full life expectancy of such a giant breed. My advice to you is that you use the glucosamine, keep him lean, and let him exercise, but no jumping.
