At what age did you have your boys neutered?

The vet says it's ok to neuter now (16 weeks)  but the breeder recommends waiting until he's 6 months old.

What are the reasons for neutering later or earlier?

Thanks in advance!

Randy was/is an alpha (very dominant) male and I had heard 6 months and I had it done at 24 weeks.  I ended up feeling that he should have had a little longer of maleness as there are boy-things that he doesn't know about.  He has never squatted but he just started raising his leg but not in the normal way.  I wonder if there are any basic things he doesn't know. On the other hand, he was on his way to being obnoxious-dominant so I think that was aborted.

Ace was just neutered at 11 months. I was going to hold out until 12, but he was starting to mark a little too often during our walks for my liking, and money was at a good point when he hit the 11 month mark. My dog has always been on the smaller side, even from birth, and I wanted to give him as much time with his man hormones as possible so that he would have sound development. I do not think it is of the utmost necessity to neuter early. I believe it has been largely forced on us to neuter early as a means to stem pet overpopulation - but being a responsible owner curbs ALL chances of that happening.

I'm very glad I held out as close to the 1 year mark as possible. Ace will have had the benefit of being intact during his critical growth stages, and can now continue the slower part of the process in peace, and not excessively marking.

*** I should note that here in Europe, it is not uncommon to not neuter pets at all. Overpopulation is not really at the critical point it is in the USA, and intact dogs do lead healthy, long lives. I would not have neutered Ace at all, had he not been cryptorchid. Because there was a highly elevated chance of his retained testicle (it was somewhere deep in his abdomen) becoming cancerous quickly in his lifetime, Ace was snipped.

I'd say wait until 6 months unless he is showing signs of bad behaviors like marking and humping. Pediatric neuters are linked to health problems later in life. Most vets recommend around 6 months and most breeders say 1 year. I wouldn't do it any earlier than 5-6 months.

I had both my boys done before 3 months. They are both fantastic and they had no complications with surgery. We never had any marking behavior either.

With girl dogs there's a little more risk because of how invasive the surgery is. With boys.. well. Castration of animals is not exactly rocket science. It happens every day with much less bother on farms across the US. Slit, snip, stitch. Simple.

No earlier than 6 months. Earlier can cause health problems later in life.

I would not neuter any earlier than 6 months, preferably closer to a year. Henry was neutered at 4 months and is fine, but now that I have read more research on the matter I would not do it again that early. Luke was neutered at 7 months because he was starting to mark excessively. Here is one article that might be of interest: http://www.akcchf.org/canine-health/your-dogs-health/determining-th...

Unless there are special reasons to neuter early, somewhere between 6 months and a year works well, depending on the disposition and behavior of the dog in question. Physically, neutering later has the advantage.  Behaviorally, very dominant dogs will do better if neutered earlier.

I have also heard that neutering early and later affects the size of the dog...Some say they will get bigger when neutered early and others say the opposite! so confusing....but I would do whatever is the healthiest anyways~

Dogs neutered early do not get bigger, this is certain. The opposite MAY be true, but so many factors play into final size that I would not loose sleep over figuring that out. If there were a difference, it would be negligible when neutering is done around six months, which is more or less standard in pets.

I waited til almost a year so they would have the benefit of hormones as they grew.  I decided this after doing reading on internet also.
