Barking at 2:30 AM for What?
First of all, I totally understand and accept corgi barking even thought it could be excessive sometimes.
But I really need to know what caused mine barking at 2:30 AM when there is NOTHING going on...
My 7 months Pembroke has been sleeping/crating in the living room during bedtime since the first day she came in our apartment. And she has been doing really good and quiet till recently. Last night was the worst so far.
--- Last night, she barked around 2:30 AM for which I don't see any difference around. If I let her out of the crate she would stop a bit and still barked. It ended up as that my boyfriend and I walked her for a few blocks at 3:30AM... then put her back to the crate, gave her another good night cookie and call for the night/morning.(I thought she has been provided enough exercise during the day: one hour hiking in the morning + one hour running in the park at night, maybe it is not enough...?)
This morning, I took her out for around 1 hour walk before I left for work. When I reached my office and checked the video surveillance at home (an app used for online chat...), she was barking AGAIN.... Sigh..(Thank God she fell asleep while I am writing this....)
The only thing I could think of is the weather, since yesterday was 29C her and this is her first summer. Does anybody has the similar problem during hot weather?
If it is not the weather, what will it be? Teenager barking or else? (she found her voice already, that's for sure!)
Any advise? How I could solve this? (I might receive neighbor complaints very soon...)

Is it her alarm bark or her attention bark? They are usually different barks and that might help narrow it down.

It started as deep growling (alarm bark), and then turn into high pitch bark (more like attention bark).
My guess is that she might hear somebody's TV on at the midnight and barked at it. Then I came out and checked which she found out "Mommy is still awake!" Then she barked at me....
It was my guessing 'cause I really don't know. And I could not ignore and let her bark at midnight... DROVE ME NUTS!!!

I'm guessing she heard something, too. I have (personally) found it's very hard to keep Corgis from sounding the alarm, though you can teach them that when you say "enough" or "it's ok" they will quiet.
I have had some success in training them not to bark at specific things (the paper carrier's arrival, for instance), but if there are cats fighting outside you won't hear it and it will be hard to convince the dog that there is no need for alarm. I would respond verbally to the alarm bark with something like "I hear it, it's ok" (even if you DON'T hear it) but ignore the attention bark.

Are there train tracks nearby? In the winter we can hear the traintracks (they're like 5 miles away) faintly and so I get alert barks right in my ear around 3am every morning. Urgh.

Sarah, Jack gets very angry (and barks accordingly) whenever he hears the freight train blow its whistle. Interestingly, when we are OUTSIDE (and the train is louder) he does not bark.
From his point of view, he has a winning strategy. He hollers "You darn train, don't you dare come in this house."
And the train never has.

I wonder if there is something outside she can hear that you can't. I know it is mating season, cats are fighting. I know Austin has been on high alert in the middle of the night the last couple of week. And I am sure he is hearing that kind of activity which we don't always hear.

Hey Nora, I know this doesn't help with the barking issue but i'm wondering what surveillance you use to keep an eye on your dog during the day? I've looked into phone apps but i don't know how to get them working. Thanks & hope the barking goes better! :)

I use a Skype-type of online chat app, combined with Team Viewer (that is the key!) installed on both my iPhone and a home laptop with camera. (I think Skype can also do that.)
It is just like my dog and I talk online while watching each other. So, I have two accounts. I have the laptop on and log in to my dog's account. As I reach the office, I send a video talk/call invitation to my dog's account. The only problem is that my dog cannot response. That's where the Team Viewer comes in. It is a remote control app which I could use the password to access the home laptop from iPhone --- This way, I could accept the video talk invitation on my dog's behalf. As the invitation connected, I could watch my dog as long as I want. (My dog is crated during the day, so the laptop is just easily placed in front of the crate. But if the dog is running around the house, I don't think my way works...)
I have been watching her for a while, most of the time she just sleeps. It is not actually watching, but more like checking. It is still good to see and know she sleeps. Besides, corgi sleeping postures are so cute, I don't think you will get tired of watching.
If anybody wants to try or me explain more how this works, let me know.
(I admit that I am a crazy Corgi mom....LOL...)

Nora, you don't need to use Teamviewer at all, go to Skype, Preference, check "answer automatically" and you're good to go.
