I was wondering whether I should clip Napolean's nails every month, week, or any other time. Do I clip every time he takes a bath (once every 1-3 months)? Is the schedule for cleaning your dog's ears different from clipping nails? Do you use a a formula for cleaning your dog's ears?
I need some input on the routines you have with your corgis so I know I'm doing the right thing with Napolean :)

I've never cleaned his ears... My breeder checks him over periodically when I visit and yesterday she said his ears were clean as a whistle! I also never brush his teeth, but he does eat bones every day. He has very little tartar.
I do his nails about once every two weeks with a dremel.
Nice to know ;) Napolean's ears are a little dirty and he needs some more bones to obtain shiny back teeth. What bones do you give him? Do you let him chew whenever he wants or do you give it/take it away?
Oh. Napolean hates nail clipping so I allow him to "cut" his own nails by scratching a piece of sand paper :P
Waffle eats a raw diet so he gets poultry bones almost every day and about once a week he will get a beef neck or tail bone. Sometimes pork tails or feet, too. The beef neck/tail bones do the best job of cleaning teeth and last a long time. He'll get all the meat off, then I'll take it inside and throw it in his bed. He then chews it down immediately or when I'm playing games or something. He'll chew on the leftovers whenever he wants until I replace it with a new one.
Okay. I will look into these different chews.
Rachael - Where do you get those treats? Can you put them in the fridge and store them?
I do ears rarely. Dogs with flop ears have more problems, but every dog is different. When I do Maddie's, there is nothing there when I clean them. Jack has one ear that tends to get dirty, but no signs of infection.
Nails vary. Jack's front stay low from walking and his back need to be done once a month or so. Madison's really should be done every other week, though I don't always get to it and they sometimes get a little longer than they should.
Oh okay. I haven't like cleaned his ears in a year...so I was wondering if I should check more often.
For nails Napolean is the opposite. His back nails get run down but I have to shave the front ones down.
I trim nails once a week - they grow like weeds!
Ears stay squeaky clean by themselves unless we go to the beach, and then I just try to get the sand out gently.
Teeth get brushed every day but he also gnaws antlers.
Wow really? I guess by running full speed on concrete Napolean's nails get run down pretty easily.
Okay. Napolean has very white and shiny front teeth but his back ones are not very clean.
Where do you buy the antlers? Is it pretty good with their teeth? I need to find a reliable chew/bone for Napolean.
Mishka's nails just don't rub the concrete the right way for that to work for him (alas!).
I get antlers online from Pet Expertise, but you can get them lots of places. I think there was a discussion recently that involved several links, and also some discussion about the hazards of hard recreational chews. I think someone gets moose antlers from Amazon (planning on trying those out soon).
You should find that discussion for all the details so you can make an educated decision about whether antlers are likely to be safe/work well for Napoleon - sort of depends on chewing style + your assessment of the risk.
Cool. I just looked at the discussion. They seem very popular and now I really want to try them out with Napolean! Thanks for the suggestion ^ ^
I do my dog's nails with a dremel every couple weeks. Pretty much when I see they are looking like they are getting long. Probably every 3-6 weeks but they aren't on a schedule. I NEVER bathe, well hardly ever. I think Franklins last bath was in December to get ready for a photoshoot for a magazine. My dogs only get baths when they roll in something stinky.
As for ear cleaning, I use Epi-Otic that I get at the vet and I clean ears when one or both of my dogs shakes their head. Since they swim everyday, when they start shaking their head or holding an ear crooked I know it means they have water in them so I'll do a rinse. I've never had an ear problem yet (knock on wood).
They also get rawhides and other things to chew so both have no tartar or calculus on their teeth, I never brush and so far they are able to keep their teeth clean themselves.
