This has been a long and draining day for me. Dante got attacked and I got bitten by a stray dog while walking this afternoon. I've never seen Dante react like that! The second he realized the dog bit me he freaked. He looked like he would have chased that dog to the end of the earth! I had to carry him the rest of the way home, whle the owner of the dog stood by and watched without saying a word. I called animal control immediately, but for some reason, after them driving around for 45 minutes, the dog is still sitting out there!! Dante is ok, and after a long ER visit, I am too. Lots of antibiotics, antiseptic cleaners, and all that jazz. I'm calling them again tomorrow about that dog, I very much want to make sure it doesn't have rabies!

This is the exact same dog that Pippa did such an amazing job of ignoring this morning. I'm worried that if things like this keep happening, Dante will have a permanent distrust of other dogs. Especially now that we don't have a single safe area to walk the dogs without driving somewhere (not very realistic with 3 small children).

Tracy you have a very good point. This may be the type of person who would retaliate by keying Rachael's car or leaving something poisoned out for the dogs to grab. However, I see a bigger problem here with an understaffed police/ animal control department. Perhaps the newspaper would be interested?

I thought about that or the TV....problem is, and Racheal I hope you don't mind, I looked up your profile to see where you live, I'm familiar with the area...here's the problem with where Racheal lives...she's in the middle of nowhere....she's the bedroom community of the bedroom communities of Houston.  I hate to say it, but the TV news wouldn't care a lick.  it's possible the newspaper would care, but again, she'd be stirring the pot, she lives in a small  largely hispanic Texas town, everyone will know it was her that caused the "Garcias" dog to be put in quarantine....doesn't matter that she did it for the children or to find out if the dog has rabies...or to get help paying her medical bills....all of which are perfectly reasonable reasons....(can you tell I've lived in small Texas towns much of my life, Racheal?  LOL   I still live in one, gotta love the politics of small town life)

I don't mind at all. I have lived in this town and the surrounding areas most of my life, and it really does boil down to small town politics. I live in the lowest income town of my county, so they really don't care. I'm not sure the newspaper would care that much, as it's not a problem of them being understaffed, rather than just lazy. They  apparently were at the trailer the dog was at yesterday, but the dog was under the trailer and they didn't want to fish it out. Instead, they just left. The manager of the trailer park is calling the County animal control and reporting the city to the State.

I live in a trailer park right now-something we though was a well thought out financial decision. We are trying to save for a house, and the manager is a close family friend. It was  her trailer and a very nice one. There is only 1 other white family here, and they are in the process of moving out, so I am in the minority here. People already torture and tease our dogs when they are in the back yard because a neighbors dog was picked up by animal control and they assume it was us who called. I have had people follow me while I was out for a run after that, so I fear it may be more than just keying my car.

What the hell? The owner was just standing there and watching? Is he insane? I would feel like I'm in the Twilight Zone if I had been in your shoes. That's just so... strange!

I'm sorry to hear about the attack and I hope you and Dante will be alright. :|

It was surreal watching her reaction. She seriously just stood there with her friend like I wasn't even there. She also took the dogs collar off today, I guess to try and hide the fact that it is a pet instead of a stray. Angry doesn't even come close to describing how I feel.

Thank you so much, everyone. We have called Animal Control no less than 10 times, and the dog is still sitting in its front yard. I will be calling again tomorrow. Our animal control is run through the police department, so they are both aware of the situation. I found only 1 local store that carries canine pepper spray, so I am headed straight there after payday.

The landlord is furious, and is posting a note to everyone that ALL dogs are required to be vaccinated and properly contained. All loose and unvaccinated dogs will be removed immediately.

What is animal control telling you when you call?

Each time we've called, they have told me that there were no units available to respond, and that they would sen done when they became available.

That is so awful that after all that has happened that dog is still out there. I hope things end up working out. Keep us updated!

At this point I would be MAD and state to the police(with a witness) that you will be recording the phone call due to the limited time factor of possibly having to get rabies shots since they have not done anything yet and also if they say they have then they MUST notify you of the findings. A dog bite is a dog bite and I would think that these people should have called the police to also reassure and to provide them with shot records. You can also ask for a manager/or some higher person in the department.

Do you have a Sherriffs Department? I would try them also....it's not ok when you have a puncture would. Did you tell them about the bite and you going to ER?????

I am furious about this all, and have been calling several times a day. They are aware that children play outside near this dog, but don't seem to think it is a priority!! Since animal control is run through our police department I had called the PD immediately. The responding officer is the one that told me to go straight to the ER, so they are very much aware of the bite. This same police department took 4 hours to respond when we were broken into a few years ago.
