New corgi brought along some friends and they love to squirm!
I woke up today around 7am trying to get a schedule down for the new puppy that follows along with Tomahawk's and as I was cleaning up her poopy mess, I had the pleasure of finding tapeworms hitching a ride. I have never had a dog that had worms so this was a disgusting and mildly interesting surprise for me. I texted the lady I got her from and let her know so that she can get her dogs tested but she was very rude and hinted that it was us that gave her the tapeworms. I was upset but decided that in the end I knew this lady was ignorant and there wasn't anything I could say to her.
We took Fences to the vet, along with her poop and they are going to send out a fecal test to see if she has any other parasites besides the tapeworms. I sure hope she doesn't. She was given a shot to kill the tapeworms and from what the vet said they should be dead in 48 hrs or so.
Have any of you guys experienced tapeworms with dogs before? How easy is to transfer from dogs to humans? I sure as hell don't want worms coming out of my butt haha. I'm a little wary since we have my boyfriend's nieces and nephew that come over often and I REALLY don't want them to catch anything.
Hopefully everything works out well.

Oh yeah. We lived in North Carolina for 10 years, where fleas are impossible to get rid of. We had multiple rounds of tapeworms. They don't usually transmit to humans, as long as you wash your hands well before eating. I raised my kids in the south for the most part, and they never caught any parasites, so your probably safe. I think the only way to get tapeworms for a human is to actually ingest the segment, so eating rice is definitely out for a while. :-)

Mine have occasionally gotten them from finding/eating a rabitt. I use Iverguard for heartworm and it also is a wormer. Never had them transfer to a human and probably never to another dog...Fences should have been wormed several times before you got her(like 3-4 times).

Oh thank god, I have been really worrying and totally on edge about laying on my bed since we let her sleep with us last night. I found two tapeworm segments in our bedroom and it just freaked me out terribly. The lady we got her from said she had her dewormed and had her first vaccine given to her at 3 weeks which I'm sure is too early and probably didn't happen. It just upsets me that people get animals and do nothing for them to make sure they are healthy. Also, accusing us of giving her worms just pissed me off and I would have been really rude to her but my boyfriend said just to let it be. Thank you guys for easing my mind about the tapeworms. I read some horror stories about humans getting them and I just went on a cleaning mode today around my house lol.

3 weeks would have been too early but I have wormed at 4 weeks and the every 21 days for 3 times. As much as I also would have wanted to say more your boyfriend was probably right as it wouldn't have done any good:(

If she ends up having any other types of worms what would happen? Would we have to deworm her that many times or is it like the shot she got for the tapeworms? I really don't know and I asked the vet but she said not to worry until we got the results back tomorrow.
Also, I have Tomahawk on Interceptor for heatworms and it said it is also a dewormer so should I worry about him getting anything if she ends up having another parasite? I am totally clueless when it comes to worms, but at least with Fences having them I can use this as a learning experience.

It depends on the lifespan of the worm...every 21 days is when the larva(?) will again hatch and they would have more so after 2 doses I guess thet would be ok. I use Anthelban on my pups. I would wait and see what the vet has to say because there are other worms out there that this won't kill. Read your heartworm box as mine states the worms it kills. Good luck!

I had that with Zorro as well. The breeder had wormed him previously, but he was about due for his next pill and we gave it to him a few days after we brought him home. The next day my poor boyfriend, Joe, (who has never had a puppy) took Zorro out potty and he pooped out worms and Joe was SO freaked out. His description was, "It looked like something from Alien!" hahaha, but we haven't had problems since. We just make sure to give him a heart worm pill every month. Unless they're roundworm I'm pretty sure they're harmless as long as you take care of them :)

The only way your pup could have gotten tapeworms is from eating another animal that had tapeworms. Fleas are the most common culprit, so I would do a very thorough check for those. As someone else stated, you do have to ingest part of the worm in order to be infected. So that shouldn't be a problem unless for some reason one of the children decides it would be a good idea to pick up a worm segment and put it in their mouth. Even so, the worm segments dry out and die when exposed to air for too long. As for Tomahawk, Interceptor, along with most other wormers, is not effective against tapeworms. You usually have to get something specifically for tapeworms, since they're very different from other types of worms. Just make sure you keep an eye on him so he doesn't try to eat your puppy's poop or any worm segments. You could also get him a shot or pill to treat tapeworms just in case.

Thankfully we don't have a flea problem. I think that our new pup possibly had gotten the tapeworm infestation even before her previous owner. When we first got her, I checked for fleas and fortunately didn't find one. I'm not too concerned about Tomahawk getting it anymore. We got Fences a cestoved injection for the tapeworms yesterday and they said it should take only 48 hrs to kill them. There hasn't been any from what I can tell in her poop but I just found another tapworm segment on the floor so I am totally at a loss wondering if it is actually working for her. I want them to be gone already. I feel bad because we have her quarantined in a crate and only take her out to potty. I want to be able to cuddle with her but I can't until I know they are gone. This whole situation just sucks all around.
