Potty training question

Hi all! Forgive me if this is already posted somewhere but I couldn't find it in the discussion section.

Hana is 4 months old so theoretically she should be able to hold her bladder for 4+1 hours right? I have been crate training her and she was doing really well at first, but recently when she goes potty outside, she only partially empties her bladder. When I let her back inside for play time she will abruptly stop during the middle of supervised play and squirt some pee on the carpet without warning. Sometimes she doesn't even squat.

She now does this throughout the day. Is this normal, and can anyone suggest how to prevent or discourage this type of behavior?

Hi Hana, you are forgiven. it's in the FAQ. Yes, she should be able to hold 4+1 hours. Puppies are not to be trusted, they must be walked on leash for potty. She does this all day and it is normal. for prevention, please read and re-read the FAQ. Let us know if you have specific questions.

To answer your question: No, this behaviour will not eventually stop on its own, read the FAQ on ways to prevent it and how to clean up the soiled area properly. Stick with the method until 1- 1.5 yr old and you'll have a perfectly trained corgi, you have 5-14 months to go. Good luck!

Thanks Marcie! Very helpful info, however, there is nothing in there about training the corgi to completely empty the bladder when outside, rather than "saving" some reserves and squirting here and there on the carpet shortly after. .. Can I assume this behavior will eventually stop on it's own?

You can take a little wander around the block in order to encourage her to pee a second time, hopefully "running her dry", and also interrupt play-time every 30 seconds to go back out and pee again. You'd be surprised just how often these little turds have to go, especially when they get excited by play! My Border Collie would pee a lake outside, come back in, play with her brother for less than a minute then look at me and paw at the door to go out again. And she promptly peed another lake! It's pretty insane. :-D

Hi Ludi, yes, you understand!! :) The thing is, my husband and I take Hana for a daily 60min walk in the evening and she stops to pee every two houses we pass. I guess she is marking her scent when she smells other dogs. When we get home we are expecting her to be okay for a while, considering how much she pees on the walk, so we play with her but then she pees again inside. I worry that letting her out more frequently will teach her that she should pee often rather than to hold her bladder.

Sam, I was browsing on my phone so that bar up top where it say FAQ didn't show up. Now I see it... "Duh!" :)
