Help! Simon needs to lose 8 lbs. The vet put him on Iams weight loss food a month ago and at his "weigh-in" today he actually gained a pound.Frustrating to say the least!  He was eating natural balance sweet potato and fish previous to the "new" food. He is 6 years old and has a problem with his knee cap dislocating so I want and need him to lose the pounds.

Any ideas?

Regular food, mine get a  3 handfuls a day( a bit over a cup) no corn, frozen green beans work great for treats or as a filler as well as apple bits. I understand the cold but he does need some regular exercise or playing ball or fetch in the house can help too.

Charlie has been a few pounds overweight too ("getting chunky" as our vet said - I was so embarassed!)

It took 3 months but we didn't make aggressive changes, but he's down to the high end of a healthy weight now and here's what we did:

Mix his Innova beef kibble with Innova Low Fat kibble Smaller portions of kibble (we used to refill whenever he was done, but just once a day now)

LESS TREATS - this is a big one. He gets a treat every other day now, and we vary what it is - sometimes a doggie cookie, sometimes a beggin strip, etc

LOTS OF WALKS and play time - this has helped alot.

People food sparingly - basically he only gets it when dad can secretly slip it to him, much to my chagrin. But i've cracked down on the no table food rule, and it has helped tremendously. He still gets apples though, since he likes those and they're healthy.

I should preface though by saying that I have a boy corgi, and he's on the larger size already. Our vet recommended him to stay around 40 lbs or below, and that's huge to alot of people. But again, he's a bigger corgi in terms of frame, just like his dad was.

I have Foxums on Nutro Ultra small breed adult. There is a huge line of Ultra foods though for weight, adults, puppies, seniors, etc. Fox gets between 2-2.5 cups a day of it and he loves the taste. He is just over 25 lbs and mostly muscle with his energy level. You can pick it up at Petco.

Also, Star fox usually eats the Natural Balance venison and sweet potato treats. he gets 1-2 every other day. The only time this varies is if we are teaching him a new treat. Then he gets half a biscuit everytime he does the trick on command properly. Make sure you give him plenty of water as well. It helps with cleaning out his system. Outside time is a must, or at least a large room that he's allowed to run like crazy in. We have a soccer ball that fox will play with in the house for about an hour after I get home each day, followed by a half an hour of yard time. He also goes on 5 walks for 15 -20 minutes a day. Exercise is the key to a happy, healthy corgi :)
