hi all. i dont know why but badens breath has been smelling so horrible that anyone who pets him notices it right away. its smells like he drank toilet bowl cleaner and lapped up urine :( its so foul that i dont even want to cuddle him anymore. its been like this since the end of February but at that time it was mild and all i needed to do was brush his teeth and its would go away for 3 days and then come back so i just kept up with it. by the end of march it got bad to where not even brushing his teeth would help and now, like i said, its absolutely foul smelling. i work at a vets office as a kennel tech so my co worker who is a vet tech (she has worked there for 15 years) looked at his mouth to be sure there wasnt a baby tooth stuck or something but there isnt and his teeth has no tarter on them. i read on the internet that breath that smells like that is usually linked to kidney failure and asked her and my vet and they said he is too full of energy to be in that sort of condition and i have seen dogs come in due to that and baden acts nothing like that but he does drink water all day. i have a small bowl out for him and my cat and i fill that up 3 times a day. its about the size of a cereal bowl.

the only thing i can think of is after he turned a year i switched him to adult food. he was on wellness large breed puppy food and my work gave me a free bag of adult science diet food which i know isnt the best but hey it was free and i wasnt going to let it go to waste. about half way through i learned he was allergic to it so i switched him back to wellness with lamb and barley. finished that up and now because of the big price jump from $30 a bag to $38 a bag i switched him to blue buffalo and its only $29 a bag and thats made with lamb also. could that be it? im just worried about him :(

I would have a blood panel done just in case. Sometimes dogs who are diabetic will have foul breath. Since you work at a vet can you get a free exam by a vet or talk to one of them? I know I get a hefty discount on lab work since I'm a technician so it might be worth having an exam done and getting some lab work done just to be safe. Maybe he has an infection in his mouth somewhere and a course of anitbiotics will fix it? Its just weird that brushing his teeth used to make it go away so it seems linked somehow to his teeth in some way.

i thought the same the thing. an infection in his mouth seemed to be likely but she looked all through his mouth and didnt see anything :/ i do get a big discount working for them which comes in handy in situations like this. i took him in yesterday and had one of them smell his breath and for some odd reason it didnt smell! i dont get whats going on but im getting his blood work done this week so i will know for sure. my vet said that he sure dosnt seem like a dogs who has kidney problems due to his appetite and energy level but said she does recommend the blood work to be sure it isnt diabetes

I'd get him checked by the vet. If it would only go away for 3 days while brushing his teeth and then come back, it sounds like he needs to be checked. The large amount of water made me think of diabetes also. I think you have waited long enough.

I'd have a blood panel done to make sure there is nothing going on.

Just a thought. Is it possible that Baden is sneaking into something when no one is looking? Like drinking from a toilet? (can corgis reach the inside of a toilet? edit: they can! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cfv_jX9ySeA)

Also my last dog was a diabetic, and how I figured it out was the smell of his breath. It was like acetone. My vet couldn't smell it and she said that not everyone can (it's genetic, similar to the ability of detecting asparagus tainted urine). There was the smell of his breath and he was urinating a LOT. That may not be your problem but mystery smells can be a sign of something. Dogs are so good at hiding their illness. It's better to find out it's nothing than have an illness get advanced. My dog was misdiagnosed by the vet at first and his diabetes made him very ill before I put 2+2 together and took him back to the vet. :(

thats a good thought but i keep the bathroom doors closed so he dosnt go in there. i thought maybe it was the cat box but i have it on a tall box so he cant reach it.

if he is really ill hes hiding it very well :( hes eating and has so much energy still. he just seems to drink a bit more water than usual but it is getting warmer her in AR. its times like this i wish they could talk to let me know whats going on

I join the chorus: bloodwork and a full exam, then let us know.
