Momo is a 15 week old pembroke puppy and recently developed an odd problem. Everything about him is fine until he wants to run fast for any reason. He'll immediately wince in pain when he attempts to do so. But he can move around and even jog at a brisk pace fine. This has been going on for about a week so I took him to the vet today. The doctor couldn't find anything wrong offhand. He just prescribed anti inflammatory medicine and advised I should get xrays done if the problem persists after another week. So my plan is to give him his medication and a lot of bed rest throughout the week, then get xrays anyways as he's due for shots. Has anyone experienced or even heard of this problem?

Did the breeder test their hips at all?

I didn't ask. The breeder is reputable and from what I understand, CHD is impossible to breed out of the line, so I got Momo fully aware he could be susceptible to HD. But can puppies show symptoms this early?

I'm fairly certain if it's a birth defect it can show this early. It's the only thing I personally can think of. You may want to have Momo xrayed.

It's not impossible but unlikely to be HD this young.  X-rays however are usually fairly reasonable and might be able to identify any other potential problems while your at it.  Growth plate stress is very common at this age and something that they can usually grow out of rather quickly.  Hopefully it's something simple like a pulled muscle.

What kind of surface is Momo running on? Tobi will go for miles in a big grassy field, but will yelp once in a great while when he takes a sharp turn running on concrete. All seems okay in checkups. I just figure like we run, we can step wrong and yell "Ow" and it'd be the end of it. Keep an eye out.

My whole house has hardwood floors so I'm afraid that may have been an aggravating factor. He ran around like crazy the first couple of weeks before he started yelping then he stopped running all together.

I would get him check for hip displasia, ACL tear, as luxating patella! Right away. The sooner you catch it the better the outcome.
