Puppy Pads?
Has anyone used those puppy pads when house-training? I'm just nervous the dog may get used to the pads and not learn to go outside...or am I crazy? Any feedback would be appreciated!
Edit: Thanks so much for the feedback! I think I may just use the old school newspapers, that way he won't get the pads mixed up with carpet since my apartment is covered with it! I just hope I can get him trained real soon--I personally take walks/jogs often, so hopefully this won't be a real issue.

Fitz used his puppy pads for the first few weeks we had him (weeks 8 to 11). We left him with a pad during the day when I was at work. I am able to come home at lunch and let him out so by the end, he didn't really need it. Then, one day he realized how much fun it is to rip them to shreds. They have been useless ever since. If you take your puppy outside often, he will learn to prefer to go outside. The pad will be only for emergencies.

My cousin used them and now her puppy can't tell the diff between the carpet and the puppypad. To be fair, they dont monitor the dog outside of the crate as well as they should.

We're using the puppy pads with our Jack. He uses them well! He's only had a few accidents since learning he's a good boy when he uses them. We're slowly moving them towards the back door so he'll know to go there when he has to potty. We use three in the hall way, and one by the back door. He hasn't torn them up, but our Foxhound has! , and actually likes going on them. I think they're a great training tool along with praise, treats, and being patient. :]

I wish I never used puppy pads. I didn't crate her while I was at work so I left them out so Lola didn't have to hold her pee for 10 hours. And I think she missed them 75% of the time. She must of stood on it and peed off the side? Then it took me about a month to stop her from peeing where her puppy pad used to be. I had to take a vacation from work to be with her all day and night to train her to not pee in the house on that spot. She is fully house broken now, but I wish I never went with the pad method.

In my opinion, it is not a very good idea, it slows down the potty trainning process from my experience, i did not use the pad for my 2nd pup and she was house broken in less time.

Personally, I wouldn't use them. We instead used pine chips (which the breeder was using). I found that also to be not so great. Yes, it was easier to clean up messes, but it almost encouraged Vash to go in the house & not learn to warn us when he had to go. We got rid of the chips after about a month (he also started to eat them, which aside from being pretty gross, was not too good for him). He still has the occasional accident, but mostly does his business outside. Using treats & praise when they go outside, and lots of vigilance on the owners part is pretty much all you need- good luck!

I, personally, would not use them. IMO they teach your dog that it's ok to go inside, and the puppies I've seen that have been trained on them take much longer to potty train than those that do not use them. We have not used them for Gibson and he's 95% reliable to ask to go outside and he's only 9 weeks old.

I used puppy pads and to tell you the truth, I'm glad I had them. They aren't perfect, but they did help. Sometimes Baylee would stand with her front paws on the pad and her back end off the pad. She would totally miss it although she tried. She's also a "traveling pooper". Instead of going in one pile she like to walk and go, making a Hansel and Gretel trail. Unfortunately, that meant she missed the pads with some of it. LOL What also helped, if you can manage it, is to let your puppy out on a timed basis. I actually set the timer on the stove and let Baylee out every hour. Now all I have to do is let her out several times a day and she does really well. Adios puppy pads!!

I am using them right now with Zero and all seems to be going well. He still lets me know when he has to go outside we I am home but if I am not home or I dont realize what he is trying to let me know fast enough he uses the puppy pads, I find that they have really come in handy. Hope this helps!

I don't recommend it. It lets the dog become comfortable with going indoors which is what you aren't trying to do - you want your dog to become more comfortable to go outside than in. It's been my experience that puppies chew up newspaper too so you probably won't have anything left to absorb a mess and a big pile of shredded paper to clean up when you get home.
Just invest in a good portable carpet cleaner like the Bissel Little Green Machine and work on taking him out as often as possible. Potty training goes faster this way in my experience.
