Another reason why it's good to buy MADE IN THE USA DOG FOOD.

Thanks Sam!!!!!!

Sam,

I do agree that China has become a scapegoat to an extent but we lose a lot of control when food sourcing isn't done at the local or national level. The fact that the plant in China was selling the food as "human grade" does not make me feel better--actually worse, because we expect a higher standard of control for human grade meat production.

I also think it is shocking that any dog food  company can source more than 20% of a product from abroad and not have to list that source. Now that I'm aware of that fact, I'm going to have to dig even deeper before purchasing food. Yikes! I was starting to catch on to that labeling loophole after calling a few companies and finding out that the "vitamins" in their "Made in the USA" food was sourced abroad.

The more I discuss this issue the more fearful I become because it seems that the food lobby groups are holding most of the cards and there are so many labeling loopholes. It's not just dogs I'm concerned about--these very same labeling/sourcing/inspection safety issues also apply to foods we eat!

Plus, I hope you don't think that I don't hold the importers/ manufacturers responsible. They should be concerned about the quality of their products and if they aren't then they should be prepared to lose tons of business.

I love Whole Dog Journal also!

I try to stick with foods made in Europe or Canada. Their standards make USA dog food standard laughable (same with other things as well, I'm talking about you chocolate bars from the UK. Why are you so good?). Though researching good, reputable companies for treats and toys is always good as well. We actually had this whole discussion at our pet store recently. They are going to stop carrying Dogswell brand treats since they do not use good meat practices for their jerky and are made in China (and they don't like admitting it). So they are pushing more USA and Canadian based treats to compensate for it. They just recently stocked Orijen treats as well. I think it's great.

Anyways, this stuff is scary and it makes me sad thast there isn't more information out there for unsuspecting dog owners (like my mother).

Yes, I know that Canadian and European standards are much stricter when it comes to human grade food so it seems only natural that they'd be as strict for pet products. I've always felt that feeding good food prevents a lot of health problems so I try to spend as much as my budget allows. In all cases, knowledge is power.
