Glad to help. It helped me learn a bit more as well. I think food knowledge is constantly evolving. We have a couple of friends that are Raw Vegans. Health and healthy eating is their life. They are constantly researching. They may read in one article or publication that a certain food is the best food to eat and then 6 months later read new research saying it's not as good as the prior articles stated.

It's a label that's been co-opted by the mega-food industry. "Organic" isn't as meaningless as "natural" has become, but it no longer means what we think it does.

Beef could be called "organic" if it was fed organically grown grain; it would not have to be grass-fed to qualify as "organic." GMOs can be organically grown, too, if I'm not mistaken: it's  just a matter of not applying certain insecticides and fertilizers.

The whole concept of genetically modified seeds is they can spray the crops with insecticides and the plant won't be affected.  However, what you said about beef being labeled organic whether the cows are fed non GMO grain or grass is true I'm sure.  Thank you for everything you shared.

Right. The point of GMO for the corporate agribusinesses and the chemical manufacturers is to breed a plant that can be doused with Round-Up with abandon. Any invention can be exploited for greed.

However, there are many kinds of genetic modification. For example, just now researchers are working on developing wheat that can grow with a lot less water, since we can expect more and more drought in our breadbasket regions as global warming proceeds. "Genetic modification" is what we do when we breed dogs to specific types, when we try to breed out hip dysplasia, when we develop a new color of rose, and what our ancestors did when they took a sprig of grass-like grain and developed it into something that produces big ears of corn.

Any plant can be grown without spraying it with Round-Up...just because it's immune to Round-up doesn't mean you have to spray it with Round-up.

I just found a site that speaks to this subject. According to what I just quickly read, organic food can't have any ingredients that are GMO. Here is the link that I found. http://www.nongmoshoppingguide.com/what-is-organic.html. I hope that helps.

I try to rotate different flavors between one or two quality wet dog food brands and 1X weekly homecooked meals, so Tipper enjoys a little variety and lately tried this new dog food http://www.petropics.com/Kauai.htm. It's called Tiki brand. It claims to be human grade and Tipper goes bonkers for it! In fact, it seems as if it is her all-time favorite now. I have to admit it's the best looking and smelling wet dog food I've ever seen--I'm almost temped to try it! You can see actual chunks of real salmon or chicken in the salmon and chicken flavor.

It does have garlic in it, which I know is controversial. The source is Thailand--which kind of goes against my USA only policy. But, Sam had pointed out the flaw in my theory of "USA" only dog food in the past so I've been a little more open minded since even "good" companies have had recalls.

Has anyone else tried this brand with positive results? I've never seen any recalls on it. For now, I'm very pleased with it and plan to keep feeding Tipper the chicken and wild salmon flavor in rotation with the other brand I've been buying. Not so sure that I'd consider the Tiger Prawn flavor, though.

I've only fed the Tiki Cat, but it is all human grade.  In fact, the salmon looks nicer than any canned salmon I've seen for humans.   I confess I tasted it once, just out of curiosity, and it was amazing.  Seriously, better than any canned salmon I've ever bought for us!   It even tasted fresher.    Because it's for cats, it has nothing but the salmon in it too.     They go wild for it.    I might try the Tiki Dog now, just for variety.   Mine get Honest Kitchen, a mince from the local mennonite butcher, and occasional leftovers from us, mostly for flavor and variety.   Our corgi boys will eat anything, but our beagle x lab is extremely picky.

This blog has generated the best string of comments on the site!! :-)

Yours reminds me of another crazy pet story: During World War II, my mother had a cat that would only eat a certain brand of canned pink salmon. In those days, you fed your cat stuff like canned tuna and salmon and the like, and I suppose people hoped pet and barn cats would fill themselves up on whatever mice were around.

Well, of course, comes rationing, my mother couldn't get her hands on the beloved pink salmon. And when she could, there was a limit to how much she could buy. The cat flat-out refused to eat ANYTHING else. It preferred to starve, thank you. My mother had to beg (and probably bribe) the butcher -- he would sell her the stuff under the table when he could get it.

Dunno if there's a take-away to that story, other than to feed the cat a variety of protein sources! And that cats are weird critters.

y'know, this conversation reminds me...  Once a vet who was in practice here years ago invited me to adopt a Heinz-57 that belonged to an old guy who'd had it for years -- dog was 12 or 14 years old. Old guy was going into a nursing home & had to find a place for the pooch. Vet said the guy was a vegan AND he'd been feeding the dog a vegetarian diet for years.

This was long before I had any DIY-cuisine designs on my dawgs. So, said I, "How can a dog live on nothing but veggies? It's a carnivore."

Vet said, "I dunno, but the dog's in great health."

Is that strange or not?

I don't think we will ever know what is truly the best way of eating for us humans or our pups. So many different opinions and research. All we can do is eat as healthy as we can and feed our pups what we believe is the healthiest for them. At one time Salmon oil was supposed to be really healthy, now supposedly not as healthy as originally thought. Now it's Krill Oil that's supposed to be the best. We'll probably find out in some new research that none if it's good...who knows. :)

Ain't that the truth!

Maybe we should all be vegan vegetarians, including our pups...LOL.
